I view priests, bishops and the pope as I do any other employee, manager/director and CEO of any other company or organization. My stance is if you molest your customers you should be thrown in jail. And if you cover it up you should be held accountable.
These allegations go straight to Benedict and they seem credible and documented. What was the vatican's response? That this is merely an attempt to smear the pope and his aides.
They should be smeared after what happened to over 200 deaf choir boys.

Geo, you're going to be accused of trying to stir things up by the apologists on this board. Well guess what? Things should be stirred up. Puck 'em if they can't take a joke.

I agree with you Geo. The actions of some priests and the response of the Vatican was despicable.

I am in agreement as well. But, not surprised as this has been the MO for decades with this group, which is excruciatingly unfortunate that any person can think so little of humankind that there appears to be no conscience as he goes through with such heinous acts.

I think if you read the history of many (not all) the Popes, there are some very sordid stories...Alexander VI sired several bastard children and took one child as his lover. Pius XII was Pope during Hitlers reign and had not one harsh word against the man..Pope John XII took his mother on as his lover ...
Looks like Pope Benedict is just another criminal member of the "Do as I say, not as I do" family, whose methods of control over the masses of sinners is, at best, hippocritical. More like way outta control to me.

The Catholic church is a disgusting travesty. If you try to align their "good works" and say it out weighs the bad then I hope you're not on a Parole Board of any kind.

jesus would strip them of their power, their golden robes, and expose the leaders as the hypocritical vermin that they are. he would then forgive them.

You are all quick to past judgement and condemn based on what the media programs you to believe. The majority of catholic priest and upper managment live their lifes dedicated to serving the good of the human race and trying to follow the example Jesus laid down. Who are you to judge them based on what you saw on t.v. or read on the internet. The catholic church is far from perfect but none of you know for sure what happened and are taking cheap shots at an easy target. Back off

I personally am not backing off of anything or anyone. This isn't some unsubstantiated isolated accusation by a disgruntled former church employee mentioned in an op ed piece. We are talking about the sexual abuse of over 200 deaf children. The NY Times sources are church documents obtained by the plantiffs in a lawsuit.
Stop harboring these criminals. Your attitude is the reason such abuse became so pervasive and longstanding. Disgusting.
More news outlets are picking this one up. Gone are the days when the flock will cover for Father Fondler.

Pedophilia in the Catholic church is what fighting is to professional hockey. Not officially written into the rules, but....

I know exactly what I am talking about. It was a "benevolent" priest in Panama City that molested me at age 16. He was later arrested in Pensacola after the Arch Diocese transferred him there due to allegations made in Panama City. Feel free to google it.

me as well. You'll find a Dallas Morning Sun article written about me. I luckily was not molested but have several friends who were and I was a whistleblower a coverup in the 90s.

Bear in mind that the AP reports about this include the names of the victims who are willing to go on the record about these events - this isn't just hearsay or slander.
For some reason I really doubt that the deaf man who has to communicate the details of these events using his adult daughter as a translator and who lost his faith and left the church as a result is doing this for attention.

I agree. Not to mention that the NYTs article was based on official correspondence about father Murphy to the vatican.
Hitchens had a scathing op ed about this last week in Slate:
The pope's entire career has the stench of evil about it. - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine

Just an update-
church, Inc plans on making the argument that the pope can't be deposed on this because they are a soverign nation, that the bishops aren't "employees" and that despite its own internal documents instructing bishops not to report abuse to police that bishops could have called police if they wanted to.
Disgusting.

Exposing the truth and and taking "human" responsibilty seem to never win out at the Vatican. So what they are saying is that certain abuses of power and justice will continue to take place going forward, because of how the "system" is set up?...And they wonder why the flock is waning in recent years.

This and Obama's new call for domestic offshore drilling are wreaking some serious havoc on my negativity fast.
As a Catholic by birth, who'd recently made a tenuous peace with my religion, I'm disgusted by this, but not really surprised. I remember telling Critter Jr. when this pope was chosen that he had dead, soul-less eyes. The ultimate irony of course, is that this is the church with an almost single-minded focus on ending abortion, yet the molestation and abuse of living, breathing, feeling children is allowed to continue.
I read something recently about morale not being something to "build up" in an organization, but rather something that trickles down from the top. I'd argue that ethics, compassion, credibility and a host of other desirable qualities operate in a similar fashion. Yes, I know it doesn't work that way in many organzations - with government being the poster child - but this is a church, founded upon the teachings and principals of arguably the greatest spiritual teacher who ever lived. To base an entire organization upon his life and teachings, and then to allow abuses of this magnitude to continue is unconscionable. The whole "infallibility" thing has been construed as a free pass for too long. It has to end.

Pontiff Pedophiles or white-washed sepulchres as Jesus pointed out
Looks clean, sounds good, but stinks if you look inside
God gives a strong warning for standing in the position of representing Him and abusing that privilege
God also gives strong warning for messing with children
God says vengeance is His-He will repay- this will not be overlooked- rest assured
God is the ultimate judge who has great mercy, but if He warns of grave consequences as those mentioned above, I would take heed. Don't be fooled by the seeming silence of God.
There is a legal system on the earth that is temporary and feebly administers justice, but there is a final courthouse that will truly be just.
If you disagree with this, that's fine, just don't expect me to change my mind or retract my statements.

I don't think anyone cares to debate the existence of heaven and hell in this thread. But whether or not these criminals are convicted in the afterlife is not my concern. I just want to see them held accountable while they are still mortals here on earth.
