Tax Protests and the Tea Party- Why Now?

From what I remember, the Boston Tea Party was a protest about taxes. So now we have the Tea Partiers who borrowed from the name of the Boston Tea Party. And they just had a big Tax Day protest.

Some of this might make sense to me except for that fact that our taxes are the lowest they have been in 60 years. My understanding is that 95% of middle class families have received tax cuts under the current administration. Given that these seem to be true (aka facts)-

can someone pls tell me why we are seeing tax revolts when at no other time in recent memory have we seen them?

Here is one of my favorite videos from the event-

i agree. The republicans that controlled congress played an important role as well.

What do you think we should do about it?

Snark aside, what would you do?
get the economy going...capital gains to zero, incentives for us investment....then massage entitlements downward based on age/need

geo, really, what are you smoking today? There are at least three threads explaining what the tea party movement is all about and it ish't just taxes. Not only that, only 47% of americans pay income tax, the top 5% pay roughly 95% of the income tax and the top 1 or 2% pay the first 5l%. If you would like, i'll show you my tax return for 2009 and 2010, my income for both years and then let you tell me my taxes decreased. But then i am just a stupid, ignorant and uninformed citizen who can go only on his personal situation and doesn't believe his taxes are lower this year than last simply because the government tell him so. (i admittedly am going on memory regarding the above percentages but i think they are close and i have neither the inclination nor desire to "google" it to find out). What i am saying is i am sure someone will do it for me if i am incorrect. The board members are really good at that. We have big trouble brewing in this country unless people start working together. Our congress is a disaster, our government is the only enity growing in employment and area and we are quickly spending ourselves into oblivion. I don't think, even you, can argue with that. I'll issue you the same challenge i have issued previously. Come to the meeting of tea partiers at the library on the 2nd thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. If you would like, i'll be glad to take you and you can meet all us idiots, uneducated and uninformed people for yourself, first hand.
and you live far better than your parents ever dreamed

Andy, let's suppose you posted that the vast majority of tourists come to Sowal in Summer. And you cite data made public by the TDC as evidence.

Then someone who visits the area in Winter jumped in and told you that you were wrong and that they don't believe your assertion or its supporting data because they themselves don't visit in summer.

This is what I see going on here. You are saying that the data which supports my assertion about the vast majority of the middle class is false based your own personal situation.

I think we're going to get bi-partisan support on this once we strip all the hidden tax increases out of it.

I think we're going to get bi-partisan support on this once the bank lobbyists strip all of the teeth out of it.

What hidden taxes are you talking about?

The federal government's broke.

Not sure if you're doing your own returns Lynie, but if you are, FYI I haven't been audited since I started using a tax professional to do my returns. Using national preparation firms like H&R Block can help avoid scrutiny as well.

Well, they obviously need to be going after Desso and not me. It's all relative, Desso. I hope you know I'm kidding!

I have made it a point not to respond to you but since you spoke of something you know nothing about, which in itself isn't unusual, I'll make an exception and respond.
My uneducated but wise father worked continuously through the depression as a store manager and warehouse supervisor for Safeway stores. He knew how to save a buck and invest it as well. He made money on real estate in Pueblo, Colo. by realizing where the growth would occur and buying early.
He believed in hard work and taught me the value of both work and the dollar. He would hold out his hand to any who needed it and abhored those who could work but so fit not to do so.
I am glad I was brought up with the principles he taught me and I am anything but a perfect human being. There is no such thing. To say I live far better than my parents in my particular case is a fallacy. I realize that is not true of many others but in my case it is.
One more thing about my wise, but uneducated father. He hated FDR, his programs and what he stood for. To me, it appears he was absolutely correct and following my father's example and teaching I am where I am today and I am quite comfortable with that. I don't want anyone other than the true needy to share what I have built. And, I am quite capable of deciding who those needy are. I only wish this government had such capability and exercised it.

Geo,

Of course you're perfectly fine with other people paying your share of taxes. Lowest in 60 years blah blah blah. What about 100 years or 200 years... Then you'd be shocked at what we're having to pay.

If a VAT is imposed just wait and see the taxes you've been missing out on. You'll be taking off your cheerleader outfit. Something about having real money taken away from folks for wasteful programs that tends to make people's blood boil. It's all fine and dandy as long as someone else is bearing the brunt.

Typos edited-

AndrewG, your post can't be taken seriously because of the part that said that I am fine with people paying my share of taxes.

Sorry. I think you have me confused with someone else. In 2009, I made more money than 90% of the people in this country and I paid my fair share of taxes. Retract and reload.

Geo - go watch some Bill Maher - you will get some hysterically funny yet sadly truthful answers to your questions about the more extreme Tea people. laughter definitely helps. you just gotta laugh.
