Texas schools board rewrites US history with lessons promoting God and guns

US Christian conservatives drop references to slave trade and sideline Thomas Jefferson who backed church-state separation
Cynthia Dunbar does not have a high regard for her local schools. She has called them unconstitutional, tyrannical and tools of perversion. The conservative Texas lawyer has even likened sending children to her state's schools to "throwing them in to the enemy's flames". Her hostility runs so deep that she educated her own offspring at home and at private Christian establishments.

Now Dunbar is on the brink of fulfilling a promise to change all that, or at least point Texas schools toward salvation. She is one of a clutch of Christian evangelists and social conservatives who have grasped control of the state's education board. This week they are expected to force through a new curriculum that is likely to shift what millions of American schoolchildren far beyond Texas learn about their history.

The board is to vote on a sweeping purge of alleged liberal bias in Texas school textbooks in favour of what Dunbar says really matters: a belief in America as a nation chosen by God as a beacon to the world, and free enterprise as the cornerstone of liberty and democracy.

"We are fighting for our children's education and our nation's future," Dunbar said. "In Texas we have certain statutory obligations to promote patriotism and to promote the free enterprise system. There seems to have been a move away from a patriotic ideology. There seems to be a denial that this was a nation founded under God. We had to go back and make some corrections."

Those corrections have prompted a blizzard of accusations of rewriting history and indoctrinating children by promoting rightwing views on religion, economics and guns while diminishing the science of evolution, the civil rights movement and the horrors of slavery.

Several changes include sidelining Thomas Jefferson, who favoured separation of church and state, while introducing a new focus on the "significant contributions" of pro-slavery Confederate leaders during the civil war.

The new curriculum asserts that "the right to keep and bear arms" is an important element of a democratic society. Study of Sir Isaac Newton is dropped in favour of examining scientific advances through military technology.

There is also a suggestion that the anti-communist witch-hunt by Senator Eugene McCarthy in the 1950s may have been justified.

The education board has dropped references to the slave trade in favour of calling it the more innocuous "Atlantic triangular trade", and recasts the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as driven by Islamic fundamentalism.

Isaac Newton ??? He was into alchemy. Surely that fits in to their wacko agenda. This whole thing is unconstitutional and goes beyond states rights. States rights don't allow you to subject schoolchildren to mental abuse.

Calif. bill would block Texas textbook changes - San Jose Mercury News

".......... California may soon take a stand against proposed changes to social studies textbooks ordered by the Texas school board, as a way to prevent them from being incorporated in California texts. ...........
The Texas recommendations, which face a final vote by the Republican-dominated board on May 21, include adding language saying the country's Founding Fathers were guided by Christian principles and a new section on "the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s." That would include positive references to the Moral Majority, the National Rifle Association and the Contract with America, the congressional GOP manifesto from the 1990s. ..........
Three companies are responsible for about 75 percent of the country's K-12 textbooks, Diskey estimated. Representatives for two of them?Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and McGraw-Hill?on Friday referred inquiries from The Associated Press to Diskey. The third, Pearson Education Inc., did not respond to a request for comment.
For now, California's curriculum will not be subject to any modifications, Texas-influenced or otherwise. Last July, the Legislature suspended until 2013 the statewide adoption of new educational materials to give cash-strapped districts a break from buying new textbooks. ...................."
.
A Social Studies teacher I know is acting as an adviser to this TX Ed board and is a strong advocate against some of the changes. She has an uphill battle! Perry has put a fundamentalist conservative at the helm, regardless of her lack of capability.

Yippee!!! :clap:Take back America you betcha! Drill Baby Drill! Go Texas! Praise the Lord! I expect to be giving many a talk to the students of Texas who finally have the opportunity to be free of the socialism that pollutes their minds. And I'll be explaining natural history and the beginnings of Creation as the God who gave us our country intended it to be.;-)

I saw a news program on this and it made me shudder...
in light of this, I guess I will shut up about Walton County cutting back on reading coaches...if this stuff shows up in the textbooks, may be just as well that the students can't read it.
What on earth is happening:yikes:

I can just imagine the non-Newtonian science text: "A body in motion remains in motion until God makes it stop." I feel sad for the people of Austin.

What is even scarier is that because Texas is the biggest buyer of textbooks, these changes will affect other states too and these morons will affect millions of children's education. :bang:

"This political swaying between left and right is retarding our ability to have an effective educational delivery system in the United States of America."

I couldn't agree more. History shouldn't be rewritten to gloss over the ugly stuff. it's our history. STOP making it about what we think our kids should learn, and make it about the facts....ugly or not.

Yea but the thing is the text books used in the classrooms now spend substantially more time on what America has done wrong vs what has been done right! Remember democracy is the worst form of gov except for all of the other forms of gov!

The last time I attended school was in 1973 (so I'm dating myself) but even then history was being "revised" in many instances. How do I know? I was around when it was being made and some were then trying to paint it in a different light than what really occurred. It is one thing to interpret history in different manners. It is something else to totally re-write it.

History/a textbook having a bias or being rewritten is nothing new. That is why my history teachers had the CRAZY AND COMPLEX solution of teaching from more than one source.

With more current events, they would try and get first person accounts to present each side. So when we studied Vietnam, we would have vets come in and talk to us, as well as one of the local aging hippies.

It is shockingly similar to how I get all my information/news - multiple sources and multiple viewpoints and actually listening to other ideas will give you a balanced view that shows what is really going on.

And making the kids deal with conflicting reports, differing viewpoints, and diifferent styles teaches them to think for themselves and determine for themselves what is true and what is not - even more important in this day of infotainment w/ an agenda.

With things becoming more digital it makes it easier now to access differing information than it used to.
