I'm sure its just a coincidence, but the 3 states most impacted by the incredibly slow and understated response of the Federal government are Red states. More than that, they have Republican governors. Even Fla has a Republican governor and was barely a Blue State.
I'm sure that Bobby Jindal's concerns and statements are meaningless to the Administration.
I really wonder what the government's response would have looked like if this spill had been off the coast of California?

The fact is, at this point no one knows how to expeditiously stop the flow of oil and that is the only factor that really bears consideration at this point.

we need to drill more. these accidents don't happen that often. the oil companies can handle these issues better than government.

All Jindal wants is for the federal government to get the heck out of his way.

AlphaCrab you are such a joke.. Your time is about to be up and then we will listen to you crying over how unfair life is. How the crazy tea party people took over. How all things are decent and sane again. This oil disaster is not political. I don't care who does anything as long as it gets fixed.

In light of the momentous economic impact the Gulf Coast is facing (and that means people of every political stripe), I find the premise of the discussion so absurd as to hardly warrant response. I've said too much already.

Well said. Until that sludge hits the east coast we will be neglected and treated like second class citizens. But if we were a chocolate coastal area as Mayor Nagan likes to point out about New Orleans things would be much different believe me!

I can't believe you are trying to make this a political issue.
The political affiliations of the states affected have nothing to do with the fact that BP had no disaster plan, had problems, and went ahead anyway because profit and $$$ trump everything else - including common sense.

Whatever is going at the state vs. federal level, this one is going to be ridiculed for a very, very long time.

Arnie is a republican.
What's the public gonna say when they find out that BP is running looped video because the scene is much worse than they'd care to state.
And why would this administration allow the wolf to fix the henhouse door? BP=Bought Politicians!
My best wishes for Gov. Jindel as he needlessly battles our INEPT Gov't. Really he's waiting on ecological studies of sand barriers vs. an onslaught of oil. Attn. Dumb..ses in Gov't, sand is less harmful than oil.
I fear we're only one tropical storm from ruining all Gulf state's coastlines.
Meanwhile A President is more worried about Gays in the Military. I suppose he ought to take care of those he has the most in common with! Oh and giving Amnesty to illegals too.

What exactly do you think the government should be doing to fix the leak? They don't have the resources, experience, or personnel to do so.
I share your frustration on the red tape that is thwarting cleanup and preventative efforts and am definitely placing the blame for allowing BP to be drilling and at that depth on the government and the lack of regulation (and have no illusions as to why  $$$), but I don't know what else they CAN do to actually stop the leak.
And while I was (and am) pissed at Obama for wanting to increase offshore drilling before the spill, I don't think the spill is his fault or the death knell of his presidency.

I have yet to figure out the folks who want less government involvement now wanting more government involvement with its associated cost. Although this BP Oil leak is serious, it is man made and not a natural diasater and can only be compared because it is wreaking havoc on Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. Those responsible should be paying for it and should be held accountable, but lets not blame the Government for their lack of response unless you desire to be prepared to pick up the tab.

Oversight is another, and it appears that in the BP case, there was none.

While I am as heartsick as anyone about what has happened to our Gulf of Mexico, and I do not think that President Obama has done as much as quickly as he could to clean up the Department of Interior situation; and, I am sympathetic with the people in Louisiana who have suffered so much already...I do not have much sympathy with Governor Jindal...or with the Northwest Florida delegation of senators and representatives.
A quick look at Jindal's voting record over the last few years clearly shows he has been a proponenent of off shore drilling and federal land drilling. Not near-shore, but off shore...Project Vote Smart - Governor Piyush Amrit 'Bobby' Jindal - Voting Record
Not one of our NW Florida delegation would stand against the near-shore drilling when it came up in the Florida legislature; now, they are all pointing fingers at anyone they can, but when they had the opportunity to do something -- they did nothing but hide behind the Air Force!
When Jindal had the opportunity to do something, he voted "Yes" on almost every vote to drill!
What we need in Tallahassee and Washington are people who have the best interests of the country and state at heart...instead of the next political campaign.
Senator Bill Nelson has been a lone voice against off shore drilling.
IMO we need to elect people who will stand on principle, not politics and selfish interests; and until we do, then we see what we get!

And Bobby Jindal, governor of Louisiana, off whose coast this tragedy is centered, is singing a new song, starkly at odds with what he said last year in a speech before the Republican faithful. Now he's BEGGING for federal "interference." He wants federal money, federal supplies, wants the feds to help create barrier islands to protect Louisiana wetlands from oil.
Not to pick on Jindal. He is but one prominent voice in a chorus of Gulf state officials who once preached the virtues of tiny government but have discovered, in the wake of this spreading disaster, the virtues of government that is robust enough, at a minimum, to help them out of a jam.
One hears pointed questions about President Obama's engagement or lack thereof in the unfolding crisis. One hears accusations that the government was lax in its oversight duties and too cozy with the oil industry it was supposed to be regulating. One hears NOTHING about deregulation, about leaving the free market alone to do its magic.

The even greater irony here is that despite his calls for help, he's finding the federal government completely incapable of providing the help he needs. By-in- large the feds have either hindered or completely bungled the response. Ultimately Jindal's position ends up getting vindicated, you can't rely on the federal government for help, It's grown too large, and too slow to do much of anything effectively.
