Visualizing budget cuts

People have a hard time visualizing large sums.

Once you start talking millions, billions and trillions there are conceptual issues.

This video casts the proposed budget cuts in terms we can understand.

That video was posted to youtube maybe a year ago. it might have had relevance then (might). Also he speaks for himself and certainly not for me when he assumes that the public doesn't understand the difference between a million and a trillion. Maybe that's true of the people he associates with. I don't know.

It would have worked better for me, if they had shown how many of those "pennies" were in the red zone before Obama took office. It's seems kind of silly to blame all them pennies on him.

I think blame was directed more at the lack of pennies (or at least fractions of a penny) being removed more than the number there.

Yeah, I know. It seems like a generally overwhelming bunch of pennies. Maybe each and everyone of us should give up our social security and medicare... maybe I need another drink...:idontno:

I say this in a good way, Lucifer ...only you and you only, have the ability to visualize the difference between a million and a trillion in your head... I am constantly amazed and WOWED by your many intellectual and now visualizing skills. Since I fall into that "Dumb, not understanding area" that folks like you don't associate with...I guess we will never meet. SOB!:sarc:

The blame game is getting old...too many "Bush reruns" being used to cover up the lack of "high ratings" for this new Obama show. With all the recent critical reviews and lost of sponsorships I bet this show gets canned in 2012!

All I said was I would like to see how much of the deficit is Obama's fault and how much of it is due to previous administrations. If you're not interested in visualizing this, you can keep on visualizing this like it was a game show.

Debt or deficit? I think you meant debt. Here's the growth under this administration and congress thus far. They are doing a bang up job, don't you think?

I'm pretty sure the growth here sets records. If you think what they have done in just a year and a half is crazy, just imagine what they might pull off by the end of O's first term! At the current growth rate, We'll be tipping the scales at around 11.5 trillion by the next presidential election, effectively double the nation debt in just four short years. What an amazing legacy!

So, does this mean that the debt is all Obama fault, or that some of it (six trillion or so) was in place before his administration, and that some of it has to do with The Three Trillion Dollar War in Iraq(unfunded in the Bush administration) or the eight years of Bush tax cuts. Maybe some of it has to do with the Bush bail-out scheme of 2008 or the economic collapse in the last two years of the Bush administration. Gosh, it's so hard to keep track of the pennies.

If it's the fault of the Bush era tax cuts, why is O keeping most of them? If it's the fault of a war, why is O still fighting them? If it was the bailouts, why did O continue to do them?

IMHO, any debt accumulated on the dems watch, is the dems doing. If you look at the long term graph, the upward trajectory changed dramatically when Bush left office. Bush didn't start that, the dems did, as soon as they had control. Your party should and will be held accountable for those decisions.

I know this is hard for you to take, but the economic collapse happened during the Bush administration. The first bailout happened during the Bush administration, and approximately six years of costs of the Iraq war happened during the Bush administration, although it wasn't included in the budget. Do you really think people have forgotten?

I don't blame administrations for economic downturns. I blame them for their responses and for the financial state of the federal government under their watch. Bush and Obama didn't cause the economic downturn, we did. What people do know is that under this administration the federal response to the downturn has been lackluster - that is something I'm quite sure they will be thinking about when they go to the polls in future elections.

I also find this rather funny - your party has so little to point to that they can be proud of that they continually fall back on the old tired line, "it's all Bush's fault." Face it, your team is doing a lousy job right now. They've handled this downturn poorly. The repercussions (debt, economic malaise) will be felt for years.

We do agree on one thing, Bush was a lousy president. What I don't think you've figured yet is that Obama's a lousy one too.

I think we have some grounds of mutual understanding. I don't consider myself a "Bush basher". The reality is that the problems with the economy have been brewing for quite a while, regardless of administrations. The Bush response was "what problem?" If you want to criticize the current administration, who, like all of us, were blindsided by this crisis, for having lackluster fixes for these problems in 18 months, I think that's a little pre-mature. We use to let a President try his best for four years before we labeled him as Hitler. Remember the good old days?

I don't know how on earth you ended up taking that personally unless you're an acquaintence of the person who made the video. As far as a trillion, I think of it as a million millions which a lot of people can grasp. Heck they make hard drives now with terrabytes. Beyond a trillion, I start to have trouble. Maybe I'll get a handle on that with the next generation of hard drives.

I actually believe that the concept of billions and trillions are very abstract to most people.Yet when they hear that $100 million was saved they understand that. Heck that's lottery winner kind of money.

If you don't people most people are that conceptually challenged, I refer you to:

I'm interested in that, too. It's not out of a need to bash Bush or any other president. I'd simply like to know the facts. My understanding, which I'm not sure is correct, is that Ronald Reagan was the first modern president to start ramping up the debt. Anyone out there have the facts?

This site has it as a percent of GDP:

This site has a full historical view:

Its difficult to find a lot of detailed, graphical debt info prior to the Depression.
