New Vatican rules codified ?the attempted ordination of women? to the priesthood as one of the church?s most grave crimes, along with heresy, schism and pedophilia.

Yep, and the argument behind why they can't ordain women is rather stupid.
Not good to burst into laughter when debating these issues with cassocked priests at the Pontifical University, but it was a close call when they got all het up about the "lesbian church."
Priests "marry" the church (a female), so a female being ordained as a priest means a LESBIAN church and goes against the very core of christianity.
The idea that nuns are "brides of Christ", so why can't female priests marry Christ instead of the Church was not acceptable either.
One might argue a lesbian church is better than a church full of pedophiles, but what do I know.

Of course, priests weren't required to 'marry' only the church until 1123 (FIRST LATERAN COUNCIL). In those days many priests traveled from small community to small community and sometimes had a wife and kids in one or more of them. When that priest died the spouse(s) and children would petition the church for support or for the priest's estate.
I guess by 1123 they were tired of paying out every time a priest kicked the bucket.
This edict (or diet or council or whatever) effectively ended a lot of the post-employment costs associated with the priesthood and dissolved their marriages.
