Multimillionaire health care executive Rick Scott narrowly captured the GOP?s nomination for governor of Florida Tuesday night, shocking both Republican and Democratic insiders who believed the free-spending newcomer?s fortunes had taken a sharp turn for the worse in the final weeks of his campaign against state Attorney General Bill McCollum.

It's the year of the outsider, but Rick Scott? This guy carries a lot of baggage, and he's going up against a strong moderate democrat with good business and fiscal background.

Certainly will be a fascinating race. Somebody sell me on this guy.

I've taken a look at her website. Thank you for making it available to all. She says all the right things, the only question is, will she live up to her campaign promises? That said, despite all the immediate rude and snarky bashing of Rick Scott by the liberals on board, which totally makes me want to support him, I find Alex Sink's stand on issues very acceptable. Until someone shows me the other side of the Rick Scott fraudulent situation, she has my vote.

With a republican dominated legislature to keep her in check, we shouldn't have many issues. Plus she is the CFO, so she knows a thing or two about balanced budgets.

I don't know much about Scott yet. But I don't think I'd be unhappy with Sink if she won. The debates will be interesting.

We've had a democrat in the Governor's office for 4 years now so it seems like the status quo to me.:lol:

Man, Scott is currently out ahead of Sink by 5 points according to Rassmussen. Apparently a lot of people like this guy.

And PPP has Sink up by 7. Given the bias of each of the two polls, it's pretty much even at a point when a number of Florida voters are still probably fuzzy on whether Sink is male or female. (huge percentage of voters admit to knowing nothing about her)

I am sure she squashed a bug when she was five or something equally as trivial and we will be seeing it in the near future.

You are probably right because the Ricker's only shot is to tear down Alex's popularity or at least frame her in a negative light before many voters even figure out who she is.

I like the joke, but personally I'm not going to let this become a R vs. D thing for me. The federal government could crumble to the ground (and probably will under current leadership! :D) but if we have a strong governor who knows what he or she is doing, we'll all be ok. This is the most important race for me this fall. I'll give them both an open minded shot and decide later down the road once I hear more about how they will handle things.

You got to remember that all of Scott's problems were because he opposed Hillarycare.

Our attorney general spent lots of money stating otherwise. It has seriosuly tarnished Scott, and I don't think many Republicans or independents are too terribly enthusiastic to get behind him.

Scott spent about 30 million tarnishing our attorney general. Both would have been better off talking about the issues and remembering the 11th commandment.

I disagree. His problems were all about greed and lack of integrity; he simply used the health care system as an avenue to satisfy his greed--and in the process hurt thousands of vulnerable people. Anyone who is interested can find the court records to see for themselves.

Since the majority of this board is singly fixed on putting more big government, socialistic, tax and spenders in office, I would expect the majority to disagree. But once he disagreed and fought against Hillarycare, he, like most of the big hospitals and free market believers, became targets of a federal justice system gone wild. No different than travelgate.

You must have read a different news story than I did. They seem to have treated HCA rather well. And HCA treated Scott well.

Unless you have now started believing in trickle down economics, why do you keep trying to blame Scott for the Clintons attacking him through the Federal Justice system because he objected to Hillarycare?

Also just saw where he got more applause than Sink at a conference, so there. He is obviously more qualified, the people have clapped.

I'm not blaming Scott for anything. He obviously is a savvy, if not tarnished, businessman. The fact is that he got crazy rich off of Medicare and Medicaid, two programs that would be considered 'socialist' by the litmus test applied by the Tea Party types. Look, this guy is unpalatable to moderate Republicans and Independents. He is going to lose, Alex Sink is going to win. I'll bet you a hot dog at that place in Defuniak Springs on this prediction.:wave:

Well it depends how you define qualified and treated well.

PolitiFact Florida | Rick Scott, former healthcare CEO, faces questions about past

Among the revelations from the 2000 settlement:
  • Columbia billed Medicare, Medicaid, the Defense Department's TRICARE health care program, and the Federal Employees' Health Benefits Program for lab tests that were not medically necessary or not ordered by physicians;
  • The company attached false diagnosis codes to patient records in order to increase reimbursement to the hospitals;
  • The company illegally claimed non-reimbursable marketing and advertising costs as community education;
  • Columbia billed the government for home health care visits for patients who did not qualify to receive them.
The government settled a second series of claims with Columbia/HCA in 2002 for an additional $881 million.
For a whopping total of $1.7B in fines.

Has anything ever been published that shows Scott was involved in the decisions revolving around the fraud case?

From my understanding, he was/is the CEO or president of this company. If he could reap the profits he reaped and not know it was fraudulent, then he was either incredibly dumb, or incredibly shrewd enough to distance himself from a billion dollars worth of fraud. Either way, is this someone you want to trust your state to?

He was on Lou Dobb's Money line the day before he got ousted. I saw it (probably live) and he was a babbling idiot. If anybody has that clip please post it. It's priceless.

Untrustworthy as our Governor. I have heard, seriously, that he is a good fisherman though, seriously.

Well, association doesn't imply guilt. Pelosi, Reid, and Obama all know Charlie Rangle, but that doesn't automatically make them felons.

I hope you're being facetious. There is no "association" between Scott and the $1B fraud. From everything I've heard he was the man who did it, he's, more or less, admitted it, and it's up to you whether this seems revelant in your choice of a governor.

Link? I've been doing some reading on this and there is nothing linking him to these cases. If you're going to charge someone with a crime, please back it up with real evidence. (Follow up: If that evidence existed and the connection was obvious, why didn't the Clinton Administration charge him?)

Yes it was. Dozens of hospitals were charged. Most were cleared of just about everything. And people blame Scott yet he was never questioned or charged with anything. Those Clintons are a sneaky bunch.
