It was supposed to be an event to reclaim civil rights. Then it was billed as one to restore honor. And from what I'm reading it played more like a religious revival under the guise of saluting our troops.
Questions for folks who get Beck and his big event today-
From exactly whom is his movement reclaiming civil rights (and for whom). And who exactly became or made the country dishonorable and who exactly would be restoring honor- when and how?
I'm not in attack mode- just looking to be informed so pls take your sharp teeth out and dumb this down for me- cuz I'm not in synch with what tens of thousands and many more who didn't attend evidently understand.
Thank you.

My father wanted to have my big sister's honor restored after he found her in the back seat of her boyfriend's Dodge Dart with her knickers down around her ankles. Where was Glenn Back back in 1984?

Back in 1984 he was probably in the backseat of his Dodge Dart convincing some young girl to pull her knickers down around her ankles.

After much research, discussion with others and analysis of all the information, my take is that-
The TP is really a Republican civil war. It is a group of Republicans who are fed up with Democrats and with the Republicans of late who look nothing like Republicans- fiscally speaking. And to them Obama's policies represent the last straw.
But here is the rub:
The TP (like the very Republicans they take issue with) have lost their way from their core principles: spending, the deficit, taxes, ethics, etc. They have allowed social issues, religion and outright crazy nonsense to creep in. They have allowed creeps from the media and the Republican party to creep in.
And all you're left with are a bunch of people who would have voted republican in the next elections voting republican because it is opposite of Obama. This does nothing to fix the Republican party. And as such, I believe it does nothing to restore honor or reclaim civil rights- let alone fix the country.

Are there kooks and nuts in the tea party movement? YES
Do they represent the vast majority? NO
Are there people in the tea party movement who have strong views on issues not central to the movement(social issues, religious issues)? YES
Are these issues part of the tea party movement? NO
Is the tea party today adherring to its core principles: less government, less spending, less taxes, more freedom? YES
I will work on policing the tea party and ask the liberals to do the same.

Idlewind,
Let's be fair. I'm not describing the actions of a small few on the fringe of the TP that I hunted down to make an example out of. I'm talking about the mainstream tea party persona perpetuated by the TP itself. Case in point- Beck's religious revival to reclaim civil rights. That was a complete hijack of the solid ideals you describe.
You'll probably say that wasn't a tea party event- it was just a grassroots group of citizens coming together with common beliefs. That's the double edged sword for the tea party- with no leadership or strict adherance to those solid ideals- the Becks and the Palins and Fox News have stepped up as your public face, your leadership along with their agendas.
And now the folks who started with those solid ideals are the fringe and the TP is all the other stuff that only those from the very right can get behind.

That was my point, I can no more control what people say and do that call themselves adherents to the tea party than the left can control people who are followers of their positions. But the positions of the movement that we ask candidates to promise to promote are contained in the Contract From America. That is the tea party's agenda and its mainstream thought.

Leading up to the rally I was really feeling down about my country. I felt like we had no honor. Now that our honor has been restored, I'm walking on sunshine! Whoo-weeee!
Quit it- you're cracking me up

Geo,
I think you're missing a huge point in that the Tea Party is about getting their own candidates elected that will represent their values. They aren't out to fix the Republican party.
What about the Democrats? No one is discussing why they are going down the tubes. Democrats are fighting amongst each other like never before. The problem with the Democrats is there's never been any honor to restore. This election is incredibly significant in that it will be a massive shift in power and policy.

Democrats are just funny. Boyd is a great example. They are acting like Obama belongs to another party, say they are "conservatives" and then vote how Pelosi tells them to when it counts. All he really wants is another 2 years and will say anything to get it.

They are acting like Obama belongs to another party because they want their voters to think that they care about the deficit and getting government spending under control.

Does anyone recognize that the Great Pendulum of Control is cyclical?

Hillary would have been a much better choice in '08. She wouldn't have destroyed all the political capital gained in less than two years. You could live a lifetime and never see the political momentum Democrats had prior to '08 election.
Fundamentally transforming the US is not what the people wanted. Now it's all up in smoke. When they go down they go down in flames.

Don't get me started on TP candidates. I spent a lot of time making and rehashing my point that where the TP is going wrong is letting nonsense replace noble and agreeable cornerstones. That was their first mistake. Their second mistake- after getting us to take notice to their movement they ended up providing candidates who are no better than the Republicans or Democrats they seek to replace (and in many cases they are significantly worse).
My favorite example is in Nevada. I believe in this political climate my wet swimming trunks could easily beat Reid.
I'll help you write the dems' postmortem. Start a thread. But leave out the part about an entire party having never had any honor to restore (we already discussed this in the Beck thread down the hall to the right).

Candidates are hard to come by no matter what the party. Who wants to subject their lives and their families lives to the scrutiny, the negative comments, the downright slander, the shady negative ads? And both parties on all levels of government are equally guilty. So we work with the hand we are dealt.

Sad but true
I would say that we could stop the madness by not voting for those who go negative and attack their opponent, but even more sad is the fact that such tactics definitely work. That is our fault.
Beach Fanatic
in addition to that, we have people voting for the opposite party's worst candidate, hoping that they will lose against their supposed best candidate. The problem when people do this is that both parties get the worst candidates and America gets the worst elected officials.

Which is why I (and many others) are really warming to the idea of independents or a viable 3rd party.
