Republican U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio, a former Florida House Speaker, and House District #7 Republican Representative Marti Coley are being touted as "especially helpful" for delivering the funding for the new luxurious $48 million First District Court of Appeals building in Tallahassee.

However, getting "credit" for a palatial structure some call the "Taj Mahal'' courthouse isn't something they want --especially in a year when Republicans claim to be more conservative than Democrats with taxpayer dollars. Read more

And if we are concerned about fiscal responsibility -- David Pleat owns a small business, meets a payroll, and is past president of the Destin Chamber of Commerce. He is someone who respects that the coast is the economic engine of our region, and would protect our interests. Marti Coley, on the other hand, is employed by Chipola College as special assistant to the president. She has channeled millions in funding to the college in the same year she blamed her vote to deprofessionalize teaching on budget constraints.

District 7 is the definition of a gerrymandered district, and it is shaped like an octopus tentacle. It stretches from south of Tallahassee through Blountstown and Marianna, and catches the coastal parts of Walton and Okaloosa counties. Marti Coley benefits from a voter registration advantage and the fact that her district is thinly spread over many media coverage areas. Polls have shown that she has very low name recognition and very low support despite being elected to multiple terms. She is from Blountstown and lives in Marianna, and focuses on those areas. She takes the coast for granted because of the huge voter registration advantage Republicans have in this area, and because our media doesn't cover her lack of accomplishment. But regardless of party, she is bad for the coast.

I have seen David Pleat speak at least twenty times. He shows up to everything, even Tea Party events in Wakulla. The man has worked tirelessly to reach out to voters despite his relatively small campaign budget. If you are curious about his positions, he's always taking questions at events. He is very impressive, and can address some of the most obscure policy questions imaginable on the spot.

If ever there has been a candidate who deserves the support of the grassroots, it is David Pleat.
