Cali decriminalizes pot

A month before California voters decide the fate of a ballot initiative that would legalize marijuana, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that essentially puts those caught possessing small amounts of the drug on the same level as those caught speeding on the freeway.

California reduces possession of marijuana from misdemeanor to “infraction” ? Hot Air

Anyone think we will ever have something like this in Florida? This state tends to lean libertarian on most issues, but I'm not sure our elderly constituents would approve.

It may be a while. We still plant trees to make paper.

Before Fla decriminalizes or goes medicinal, let CA and CO get it all figured out. It's like the wild west in CO right now.

I have long thought that there would be a domino effect with decriminalizing marijuana. Once people realize the incredible drain of resources and money wasted fighting something less destructive than alcohol, things will change. Of course, lots of politicos are funded by people profiting from the prohibition, so look for slow change.

The only problem is, the feds can still go in there and bust people. It depends on the administration, but doesn't seem to be a conservative or liberal issue.

Exactly.

It only took us 13 years as a nation to figure out what a train wreck the 18th amendment was. And that's only because the moonshiners and organized crime were big money behind the forces that fought prohibition's repeal and stretched it out that long

Its likewise amazing its taking forever to figure this out for other drugs.

Its probable that the Drug Cartels have been quietly funding politicos and government bureaucrats who have built empires around the 'war on drugs' and fixing this mess will be stalled as long as possible.

Interesting topic. Talking about prohibition of alcohol for a moment, ask yourself, "why did prohibition start?"

If you want some help, start by googling Dr Rudolph Deisel, inventor of the real bio-desiel. You might also want to google Standard Oil and Rockefeller. While you are at it, maybe google Henry Ford, who had started making engines that would run on moonshine. Political pull is always, and I mean always behind government action. The same is true with hemp. If people really wanted to go green, they would push for gov't to allow the growing of Hemp in the USA. It is about 100 times better than trees for paper, rope, etc. Our very own St Joe company (aka Alfred Dupont) didn't like that crap, even though you cannot get high from hemp. They started scaring the American people into fearing hemp, and they also pushed from with the gov't to have it outlawed.

While in Michigan last weekend, I got a tour of a legal, licensed medical pot farm. It sells for $300. an ounce. Does insurance pay for this? Incredibly, you have to grow pot from the government's seed, which grows seedless pot. One seed is named G-13, which stands for Government Marijuana. The letter M is 13th in the alphabet. This seed comes from many years of perfecting by our Federal Government. (I wonder whose administration that came from...hmmmm). Although I don't smoke pot, I was told by the grower, that one hit will make you melt, two hits and you are out! See the Government can do something right.

In Michigan you can get a license to grow and sell their pot. You can also get a license to smoke it. The grower has to have a controlled growing environment under lock and key. Once harvested their is no control.

I smoked some G-13 here and there in my youth. Highly recommend.

Was it as good as "Tallhassee Two-Toke" or "Nagasaki Gold"? Was it as good as "Martian Pot" or "Polio Pot"? Of course, there was always the legend of "Humbolt County Primo"... but that's as far as my memory will take me...

I always thought G-13 was a myth?? I think the government does grow the stuff for research purposes. Isn't there a federal grow house in Mississippi?

Out in california you can pick up any number of different brands of 'chronic' by walking into a store. They are also selling it now in limited ways in bars, mixed with drinks like red bull and vodka. (potka) The times they are a cha cha cha changin' man!

This thread intrigued me so I did a search and found one that is in the top five, might be considered medicinal.....called White Widow and supposed to be the absolute best in the world. Skunk something is evidently very similar to what you get in a hash bar in Amsterdam. Do Y'all think we'll ever have a Cannabis Festival?

If enough states decriminalize it, the federal government will follow by dropping it's classification. That would really help to open things up.

I really feel something like this should be left entirely up to the states. It's crazy how certain clauses in the constitution have been warped by the courts in justifying federal control over such things.

I am actually on the fence with decriminalizing marijuana and not convinced it's necessarily a good thing.......I mean government control? Tax? I just can't wrap myself around this concept.

In any event, I suspect there would always remain a black market, right?

How big is the black market for alcohol and tobacco? Yes, the government taxes the hail out of both too. But these are optional consumption based taxes. If we're going to tax stuff, that's the right way to do it.

Partnership for a drug free America = Big Alcohol

I think G-13 is a myth. There are a handful of people who can legally possess and smoke marijuana. They were grand fathered in before Reagan stamped out those hippies trying to decriminalize it. The last time I saw something on it was a report from 1996 and the guy was smoking from a government issued tin with a date stamp of 1978. I seriously doubt that there's some giant government grow house, but you never know. Maybe that's what's really going on in Area 51?

OK, fair enough. But, I don't want to pay the tax. I just met someone from CA who has a medicinal marijuana permit - old football injury....actually, it was pole vaulting, I think....but, this guy is a total pothead - think Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

I think initially the Black Market will be huge like 'stills' used to be when people wanted to avoid that taxation. I suspect this black market will probably level off when you're hitting retirement and have the STD thing to worry about.

As soon as Monsanto can figure out how to copyright the seed it'll be legal.

That sounds like a logical thought, but making liquor requires much more work than planting some pot seeds, which grow like "weeds." I imagine growing tobacco, aging and drying it in barns, would also require more work than people would want to mess with. If the gov't did legalize it, there would be many back yard gardeners who would be growing it, because it requires so little attention.

Hunter Thompson, who was somewhat of an authority on this subject (and, curiously, looks a lot like Fishfood), said, that if they legalize it, the price will go up, and the quality will go down. Isn't it better to just sneak around, in this hidden underground society anyway?

Getting tossed in jail for 2 years for growing a plant in your backyard just doesn't seem very american to me. I think that should change.
