Holder: Prop 19 irrelevant

"We will vigorously enforce the CSA against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law," Holder wrote.

The attorney general also said that legalizing recreational marijuana in California would be a "significant impediment" to the government's joint efforts with state and local law enforcement to target drug traffickers, who often distribute marijuana alongside cocaine and other drugs.

He said the ballot measure's passage would "significantly undermine" efforts to keep California communities safe.
The ex-DEA chiefs sent a letter to Holder in August calling on the Obama administration to sue California if Proposition 19 passes. They said legalizing pot presented the same threat to federal authority as Arizona's recent immigration law that spurred a federal lawsuit.

If California voters approve the ballot measure, the state would become the first to legalize and regulate recreational pot use. Adults could possess up to one ounce of the drug and grow small gardens on private property. Local governments would decide whether to allow and tax sales of the drug.

I thought the Obama administration was committed to respecting state laws on this matter?

What are some of the reasons people are voting against it?

Recent polls seem to indicate the tide is turning -

Is Proposition 19 Going Up in Smoke? - NYTimes.com

I have heard many feel the bill is badly written and will be a big step in the wrong direction. Also, the dispensaries and offices that prescribe medical marijuana have really been pushing hard in ads for people to vote no on 19.
They were all originally for it but now once they realize they may be done have begun to speak out against it.

I need to read the bill. I am on the fence.

Ah yes, the legal drug pushers are against legalization. Not surprising. :D

What is surprising are the number of politicians and grougs that are against it. I would have expected better support.

Dianne Feinstein, U.S. Senator
Kamala Harris, District Attorney, San Francisco
Kevin Nida, president, California State Firefighters Association
Senator Barbara Boxer
Senator Dianne Feinstein
Senate candidate Carly Fiorina
Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Attorney General Candidate Kamala Harris
Attorney General Candidate Steve Cooley
Gil Kerlikowske, Obama Adminsitration "drug czar"

I don't think it's so much that people are against the legalization, just a bad bill.

I don't understand why the dispensaries are against it since it's already legal for you to grow your own medicinal marijuana, correct?

Is it a bad bill or are those opposed trying to lobby it as a bad bill? I am not sure because I have not read it.

I don't think you can grow your own. You have to use a dispensary. This would explain why they want to keep it illegal. I surely am no expert on this but I do find it very interesting as our current "war on drugs" is a complete disaster. The outcome of this could be interesting for the country.

Pot and the GOP

Is the party of ?Just Say No? morphing into the party of ?Just Say Grow??

Republican power broker Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, points out that legalization can make sense from a conservative perspective because it touches on issues of national security and fiscal prudence. ?First, there is the mess that is Mexico. Narcoterrorism is made possible by our drug prohibition in the U.S. Then there is the cost of incarceration,? he says. Gary Johnson, the Republican former governor of New Mexico and a putative presidential candidate for 2012, says he believes that ?Proposition 19 has the opportunity to be the domino that could bring about rational drug policy nationwide.?

Big local push lately to oppose this bill. A lot of incorrect information regarding nurses coming to work stoned, etc. Its actually quite funny to watch these commercials. I think some of the writers are stoned...
