Oklahoma Outlaws Sharia Law

Oklahoma on Tuesday approved a ballot measure blocking judges from considering Islamic or international law when making a ruling.
Nearly 70 percent of voters in the state cast ballots approving the measure.
The proposition?s sponsor, Republican Rex Duncan, told reporters Tuesday that the proposition is a ?preemptive strike? against judges who he worries could be ?legislating from the bench or using international law or Sharia law.?

I am ashamed of my self for not knowing that Oklahoma used Sharia Law in its judicial system. Thank god the voters voted to outlaw it.

... but I find no danger of Sharia Law being adopted - especially since the ex-husband still faces charges for what he did during their marriage.

See? There's the rub. Are you saying it's OK for Muslims to live within the US using their own set of laws and not US laws because you can't have both. It's either our laws or theirs, and I'm betting there aren't a lot of people who get a warm tingly from the thought of Sharia Law.

No, I am saying that the laws of the US apply to everyone equally - with no exceptions made for religion UNLESS EXCEPTIONS ARE WRITTEN INTO THE LAWS.

The judge looked as someone's cultural context to assess their future actions, he did not say their culture excused their actions, made them blameless, or trumped US law.

Thank you for clarifying. I think hell has a better chance of freezing over before people start agreeing to adopting US law to accommodate Sharia laws.

I agree - especially due to current prejudice and the fact the women vote.

However, I would like to see the same level of outrage when US laws and medical decisions are made for me based on OTHER religion's laws - something currently happening.

Then we should really banish Jewish law, Amish law and any other religious law in the bud...since none of them trump Federal and State statues. I am totally against the rape, murder or abuse of anyone, but this is being made into something that it was not and we are entering a slippery slope since most all of our laws are based on religious tenets, IMHO.

And while we're at it, the Roman Catholic Church really needs to Get Over It and give annulments to any couple that asks for them in order to bring itself in line with current American divorce law.

Because we're suddenly all about the government regulating voluntary conduct among members of a specific religous group and all. (There really is a good chunk of sharia law devoted to regulating what are essentially non-criminal civil disputes within the community)
