Scott: I'm looking for govt. employees who don't believe in govt. jobs

At a Fort Lauderdale news conference, Scott openly solicited applicants for state jobs and said he is looking for optimistic, hard-working people who believe in more private sector jobs and less government.

Yeah, yeah, I know what he means, but you've gotta love the irony, don't you?

The leader of Scott's transition is Washington lawyer Enu Mainigi, and the executive director is Mary Anne Carter, a Tennessee lawyer who ran Conservatives for Patients Rights, the Scott political committee that opposed President Barack Obama's health care plan. The transition office will be at Scott's campaign headquarters on East Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

Well, at least the headquarters is located in Florida.

You couldn't possibly get corruption out of state paid employees privatizing their own jobs.:blink:

Enter Rick Scott, presenting himself as a turnaround expert. ?I won?t rest until we make Florida a model for the country in job creation and education,? he told supporters Wednesday in his victory speech.

Yet if he manages to institute his plan for Florida ? and chances are good, since the Legislature is overwhelmingly Republican ? Floridians, and the country, may be in for a shock. His proposals, and his approach to business, suggest that residents here may soon see an approach to government closer to the conservative, budget-slashing overhaul proposed for Britain.

Behind Mr. Scott?s campaign slogans (?Let?s get to work? with ?seven steps to 700,000 jobs in seven years?) are proposals to privatize more prisons, give vouchers to parents for schools and to Medicaid recipients for health insurance, and to reduce what businesses have to pay for injured workers.

To ?lighten the burden of government on every Florida family,? as he said Wednesday, Mr. Scott has also pledged to shrink the state payroll by thousands of jobs, and to usher in hefty tax cuts ? even though that would mean less revenue to help fill the projected $2.5 billion deficit that Florida faces next year.

Democrats are predicting a return ?to the Dark Ages.? Republicans are thrilled. ?It?s a real opportunity for us,? said Mike Haridopolos, the State Senate president.

Not since the 1860s, Mr. Haridopolos said, has the state had such a conservative concentration of power, and as a result, he said a lot of legislation would be likely to pass. Specifically, he said the state would probably revisit a Senate bill vetoed by Gov. Charlie Crist that would have established merit-based pay for teachers.

That's correct, it's part of the union agreement.

Rick Scott is a snake oil salesman in his element.

Voucher programs a great way to screw over the poor while offering a break to the rich. Basically all of the vouchers are given out while not actually covering the cost of insurance or education. Those who can make up the difference benefit while those who cannot are left behind. Again the king is throwing gold coins to the peasants.

Oh yeah, all these poor D.C. folk seem ecstatic that the Democrats in Congress decided to send them back to failing public schools, some with a 6% math proficiency rate.

I'm sure those Democrats in congress would rather their kids go to these schools rather than their private or suburban public schools.

BTW, the D.C. voucher program costs the government 7,500 per student; while they spend 15,000 per student in the public schools.

Previously the only legitimate argument against vouchers was that the money going to parochial schools was unconstitutional. But with Zelman v. Simmons-Harris the Supreme Court ruled that school vouchers going to parochial schools by the parents choice is constitutional under the first amendment.

Anytime school vouchers are brought up, this is exactly what liberals do. They just accuse the other side of possessing some ulterior motive and insult them.

Like I said, the only legitimate argument I have heard regarding vouchers is the constitutionality of the program including parochial schools. The Supreme Court has put that to rest, and I have heard no argument to replace it.

Well, you probably don't have anything else. After all, it's a pretty tough position to defend.

There are a number of metadata studies on school vouchers/school choice out there, and most of them conclude that once you account for parental SES, charters and diversion to private schools do not result in significantly increased student achievement.

That's true. But the misconception of some is that Republicans expect vouchers to solve all the public education woes. That couldn't be farther from the truth. For most students, they will fail to obtain a strong education whether they have the choice of what school to attend or not.

Voucher programs are really meant to hit a smaller segment of students who for whatever reason have enough will power and motivation to be successful despite their humble roots.

School vouchers are not the answer for unmotivated students, but as the Beck video shows they can save the lives of motivated ones. And the motivated students will always be of greater concern to me.

Andy I'm not going to get in a pissing match with someone using the garden hose. Glenn Beck is an opinion based show. That previous post listed stats which are not supported by a source other than someone's opinion on a show. It has been proven repeatedly that Fox News simply makes up 'facts' to support their agenda.

Ok, I'm not a liberal so I will back up my facts.

Here's a 3rd party link which confirms the Math Proficiency statistic that I believe you challenged.

Drew Elementary School Test Scores - Washington, Washington DC - DC

You'll probably just criticize this one as well though. You wouldn't want to accept facts that might actually lead to children getting a better education at the costs of teachers unions

How about this link from the site you linked to?

Washington DC schools - DC elementary, middle and high school information

That shows that you apparently carefully selected the lowest performing public school. From that list I see that the public schools actually perform better than charter schools in the same area. Using that information it seems that the voucher system doesn't work.

Well I didn't select that school; it was the one that Glenn Beck cited in the piece.

And voucher programs are for private schools, not charter schools.

Well that speaks volumes.

We should compare private schools to the public and charter schools then. Unfortunately private schools are exempt from the standardized testing so the entire argument is moot without actual proof.
