Yes.

There were rules. He was aware of them. He broke them.

There are consequences.

Case closed.

I hope he gets fired. He is a jerk and he hates all Republicans and he is really nasty on his show. He broke the rules so he will have to suffer the outcome.

I suppose he should be suspended since those are the rules, but I don't see the conflict of interest. Every night NBC allows KO to be blantantly partisan, and in fact, that's why I watch. I'm stunned to find out that NBC even has such a policy in light of what they allow him to say each night. So while I can't cry for him, If I were NBC I would bring him back. The guys at the top have the right to bend their own rules and break their own policies at will. This would be a good time to do just that.

I think it would be a hoot if NPR hired him!

Here's the policy:

"Anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest,? it reads. ?Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns or groups that espouse controversial positions. You should report any such potential conflicts in advance to, and obtain prior approval of, the president of NBC News or his designee."

Hoo boy! Everytime Olbermann speaks he "jeopardizes his or her standing as an impartial journalist", and that's why we like him!

if it's in his contract and he broke the rules, then he needs to face the consequences.

However, this seems like a rule for the "real" news reporters...not the opinion/entertainment types.

Wonder what will happen when the ratings start to fall?

Chris Hayes is a good guy--but he's no KO...

I've always considered Keith to be a dark teleprompter comic. A lot of people don't like it, a lot of people don't get it, but he's good at what he does. If MSNBC had a problem with his partisanship, they should have booted him long ago.

I take it back--this behavior is, of course, OK at Fox.....

REPORT: More than 30 Fox Newsers support GOP in 600-plus instances during midterms

October 27, 2010
During the 2009-2010 election cycle, more than 30 Fox News personalities have endorsed, raised money, or campaigned for Republican candidates or organizations in more than 600 instances. The Republican support has been given to more than 300 different races or party organizations in at least 47 states. Fox News personalities and hosts have also helped start pro-Republican organizations, which have raised tens of millions of dollars.

He is a well known liberal and no one considers him a "journalist" any more than anyone considers Sean Hannity one. They are the polar opposites of each other. I like and watch Hannity for the same reasons Lucifer watches Olbermann. While the suspension is between NBC and him, I have no problem personally with him donating to whoever he wants to. If it was Brain Williams, Anderson Cooper or Shepard Smith I would have a different reaction. They are supposed to be journalists.

Just wanted to let everyone know I used to watch a lot of Fox News as well. I used to think Hannity was the dumbest person in the news, but now that goes out to Gretchen Carlson.

Sounds like the Hatch Act. He should have a right to contribute to who he wants. If he contributes to a church will that shade his view, I don't think so. He is pretty much a Democrat so how this affects his view I am not sure.

While I don't agree with the judgement, he broke the rules so now he's gotta pay.

dumbest

I think dumbest should go to Rachel Madcow. Each to their own.

Rachel lays the false equivalency of Fox and MSNBC to rest. Opened my eyes because I had sorta felt them to be more similar but she does show Fox to be much more of a political operation.

".... The reason for Keith's suspension is that here at MSNBC, there is an explicit employee rule against hosts making contributions like that.

You can do it if you ask in advance and management tells you it's OK. That's what I understand happened with our morning-show host's political donations in 2006, under previous management.

But if you don't ask in advance for an exemption from the rule, you're bound by the rule. (For the record: the rule applies to us here at MSNBC and to NBC News staff. CNBC isn't under NBC News, so they're not bound by the rule.)

I understand the rule. I understand what it means to break it. I believe everyone should face the same treatment under that rule. I also personally believe that the point has been made and we should have Keith back hosting Countdown.

Here's the larger point, though, that's going mysteriously missing from the right-wing cackling and old media cluck-cluck-clucking: I know everyone likes to say, "Oh, cable news, it's all the same. Fox and MSNBC -- mirror images of each other. But if you look at the long history of Fox hosts not just giving money to candidates, but actively endorsing campaigns and raising millions of dollars for politicians and political parties -- whether it's Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck or Mike Huckabee -- and you'll see that we can lay that old false equivalency to rest forever. There are multiple people being paid by Fox News to essentially run for office as Republican candidates. If you count not just their hosts but their contributors, you're looking at a significant portion of the entire Republican lineup of potential contenders for 2012. ...."

Also if you're a former candidate for the Republican party then you've probably got an offer from Fox News. If you're a former candidate for the Democratic party then you're just unemployed. Giggle if you want right wingers, but the point is that the veil of 'fair and balanced' is falling like a strip club in Kabul.
