Human rights help

So for one of my safety schools I am writing an essay that I thought would be easy but I has been surprisingly difficult to write.

They want us to define what we believe human rights to be and which one is most important to us.

The problem I am having is that it seems like the general consensus is that a "human" right is not granted and cannot be taken by the government. And most also say that they are universal in nature.

The problem is that it seems like governments have taken people's right to life throughout history, (holocaust) so does that mean life does not pass the test as a "human right"? Also what about things like food and water it is easy to consider those "Human rights" but governments have also deprived people of those throughout history.

Also, I have always thought of education as a "civil right" but it seems like a lot of people consider it a "human right".

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe human rights are something everyone should have, but ultimately don't. But that would mean the government does grant them.

Have you tried Human Rights Watch?

Home | Human Rights Watch

In my mind Human Rights are on several levels. Starting with basics and moving up until you have a happy society.

Right to life- Every human being has the right to life unless they have violated that right in another.
Right to food/shelter/basic medical care - Every human being has the right to these regardless of sex, class level, wealth, etc.
Right to education - Every human being has the right to education and should not be restricted from it based on sex, class level, wealth, etc.

The religion I was raised in was Unitarian Universalist and one of their basic tenants was:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person.

Once you lose that you are able to start treating people badly.

Yeah, the Human Rights Watch site should be just the right propaganda your teacher is looking for you to regurgitate for him/her. There's probably some valuable links there too for his/her future agenda assignments covering "global warming" and "Fascist America"

So instead of answering the posters question, you slam another poster's suggestion. Nice to know you could not answer with a thought of your own, but a slam. A honest answer of your own view on human rights, rather than spewing a party line would be more appropriate here. Save the vile for the political section if possible.

yeah, you're right. Too much coffee this morning--I was wrong. But, my intention was to give the poster a heads up to watch for the teacher trying to push an agenda on their students and to critically evaluate Human Rights Watch. It was not intended as a slam on SWGB reply.

It was for a college admissions essay. So one part of it giving a clue as to the general vision of said safety school to about three parts seeing if the prospective student is capable of writing a persuasive essay, even if they're not terribly enthusiastic about the topic. (IMO, being able to write a persuasive essay/position paper that you have zero enthusiasm about or even personally agree with is an extremely useful skill to have come real world job market time)

Excellent subject
Human rights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
We are given freedom of will by our creator which is good if one walks in love and bad if one walks outside of it.
The basic right to live life and everything that is involved in it is the greatest gift, but interference from selfish haters destroys the beauty of life.
Haters are a blight to society in choosing not to walk in love.
Haters by their own freedom of will in choosing hateful decisions subject themselves to incarceration.
Haters contribution to society is universal bad seeds.
There is a universal law of planting and harvesting, like gravity is a universal law, that does not require man to police it.
All haters will eventually inherit their own underground colony due to their freedom of will choice.
Birds of a feather...

The right to live life in love with the freedom to choose is paramount and is the crux of humanity.
It is within each one of us to seek love and to feel rejection when we don't have it. This is a basic precept built into mankind in which denial cannot separate but only takes destructive forms in an attempt to hide these built in needs.
Unfortunately, with freedom of will comes with it those that choose to do evil by seeking the harm of humanity.
Without human rights life is a travesty at best.
Human rights should be secured at all costs.

Second to this is a day without espresso😀

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

I'm curious as to what you have against Human Rights Watch?

Is it the lobbying against China's use of prison and slave labor?

I'm being serious here, why are Human Rights considered propaganda?

I suspect that a lot of the people that decry Human Rights Watch as propaganda are also the ones who talk about how the United States government has to Do Something to stop the horrible opression of Christians in China, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, etc. and totally misses the point of what they're asking for.

The inherent worth and dignity of every person (the basic tenant statement wouldn't copy).
I agree with all of this SWGB.
