Yay! We don't have to worry about Global Warming, the new Republican who is now the highest ranking U.S. official in charge of the environment says man has no control over the Earth at all--that God will take care of everything, and it will be just fine.

I, for one, feel so much better now  ...but, (whatever happened to seperation of Church and State?)

I agree. People need not worry. If the Earth wants to burn herself up, she will. and there's nothing we can do about it. It could happen tomorrow, what if there is no one left to worry about it? omg! 😱

from a link within your posted article:

During a hearing in 2009, he (Shimkus) dismissed the dangers of climate change and the warnings of the scientific community by quoting the Bible.

First, he noted God?s post-Flood promise to Noah in Genesis 8:21-22.

?Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though all inclinations of his heart are evil from childhood and never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.

?As long as the earth endures, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, will never cease.?

?I believe that?s the infallible word of God, and that?s the way it?s going to be for his creation,? Shimkus said.

Then he quoted Matthew 24:31.

?And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds from one end of the heavens to the other.?

?The Earth will end only when God declares it?s time to be over. Man will not destroy this Earth. This Earth will not be destroyed by a Flood,? Shimkus asserted. ?I do believe that God?s word is infallible, unchanging, perfect.?

Following the Republican wave in the recent Congressional elections, the committee will shift from Democratic to Republican leadership.

On Tuesday, Shimkus sent a letter to his colleagues burnishing his credentials by saying he is ?uniquely qualified among a group of talented contenders to lead the Energy and Commerce Committee.?

Anyone thought about how a massive solar complex might affect local temperatures and weather patterns once it goes online? Solar cells only convert 15% or so of the energy they receive into electricity and radiate the rest back as heat. Will that raise ambient temperatures in this area or cause a shift in wind patterns?

The concern I see with what these articles imply is that Shimkus appears to be one of those who make their decisions "from the gut" or "God told me" instead of gathering information from knowledgeable sources whether it be respected scientists, financial, foreign policy experts etc. ....... (I am not one to be running scared of global warming, although I think we can and should do as much as we can to improve our environment.)

Someone who dismisses things because of his own literal interpretation of the bible does not strike me as one who is likely very studied, thoughtful, or compromising - whether it be climate change, energy policy or anything else.

What if most of our politicians thought God would speak to them and tell them how to govern? And of course we know God would be telling one something different from the other.:sarc:
That's no way to run a country!

Well if we follow the 2000 year old instruction book for life then we're going to be just fine.

Now could you pass me a poisonous snake to handle?

For every argument, there is a counter argument. Regarding wrobert's post, in a similar vein, I was just in IA and NE - saw some gorgeous wind farms! Had dinner with someone who is evidently against wind energy and he stated that the hum of the turbines disturbs the mating and migration of birds. FTLOC!!

No, those two arguments use logic and science. The original post is logic and science being thrown to the side for superstition and voodoo.

I don't think the words Fahrenheit or Celsius are in the Bible, so I don't know how it could be the authoritative source on climate change.

I think Fahrenheit begat Celsius. Might have been the other way around. :idontno:

I believe the first quote is not true and can only hope the lord was misquoted, otherwise life is not worth living. And the second quote seems to mean that the earth will be fine, but doesn't mean there needs to be any humans on it.

Maybe, however my post was to point out that no matter what we do to achieve alternative energy sources and be better to Mother Earth, someone will argue it on some level.....whether it makes sense to you, others or not isn't the issue. It's a counter argument. That's all.

By your logic then I should have learned about flat Earth theory in my Earth Sciences class and the stork theory in my Health class. Perhaps the theory that the holocaust was faked in World history?

So should we have respect for ideas that don't make sense? Do you want to live in a world in which all opinions are given equal weight? I think our advancement has depended on us shooting down arguments counter or otherwise that are just plain wrong. The problem is that the politically correct crowd thinks we need to respect all beliefs and opinions no matter how harmful they are to society.

I have no idea where either of you are coming from or trying to get. Something was obviously midread or misinterpreted. My point is there will always be someone who is crazy to counter an argument, belief, advancement, etc...
