Nigel Leck, a software developer by day, was tired of arguing with anti-science crackpots on Twitter. So he wrote a script to do it for him. Every five minutes, it searches twitter for several hundred set phrases that tend to correspond to any of the usual tired arguments about how global warming isn't happening or humans aren't responsible for it. It then spits back at the twitterer who made that argument a canned response culled from a database of hundreds.
Like other chatbots, lots of people on the receiving end of its tweets have no idea they're not conversing with a real human being. Some of them have arguments with the chatbot spanning dozens of tweets and many days, says Leck. That's in part because the robot is smart enough to run through a list of different canned responses when an interlocutor continues to throw the same arguments at it.
The second crowd, Leck says, are skeptics so unyielding they won't be swayed by any amount of argumentation.
In a way, what Leck has created is a pro-active search engine: it answers twitter users who aren't even aware of their own ignorance.

If you read some poster replies...their replies are robotic..they say the same thing over and over and over. They don't make a new point, they just repeat their old point, they don't change anyone's mind because they can't get off their own talking points. So fear not Chatbots are already on Sowal.:sarc:

The posts on the political thread have gotten so bad since the election, including some of mine, that I cannot discern humor from sarcasm without emoticons. Please accept my apologies. Also, I think the closing of threads rather than banning those posting is a much better policy but I realize that opinion may not meet with some's approval.

I think closing threads is good, but still like banning if it is the same posters causing it again and again. It makes more work for the moderators and frustrates people - see no reason why adults can't just behave themselves and follow rules.

Noone needs to poop in the nachos - everyone likes their nachos poop free and we all should have indoor plumbing and bowel control. Adults can find ways to deal with bad behavior besides pooping in the nachos. Ignoring the person whose only goal is to make people poop in the nachos is a big start. So is not thinking refried beans and salsa are poop.
