I was wondering if anyone was following the upcoming Wikileaks release. The Italian Foreign Minister is saying the release is "9/11 of world diplomacy". This could get ugly quick!

Mango: Wikileaks doesn't profess to be a news outlet. There really are no rules on the internet, nor any good ways to enforce them. The hope is people will be reasonable and responsible with this tremendous media. The fact is, they are just as irresponsible as they have always been. It just goes viral quicker.

I am not saying I think the whole Wiki thing is RIGHT, just that I am really pissed off by what this info reveals.

Our elected officials are blatantly lying to us.

I don't like that - they are allowed to bend and stretch the truth, but not lie.

How very odd... you mean you can call yourself a news outlet just by calling yourself a news outlet...somebody call Fox, quick!

How so? I haven't read anything like that.

The big issue is that someone can so easily steal 250,000 classified files and broadcast them to the world.

Yes lets worry more about the guy who published it than the folks who dropped the ball on protecting it.

This is turning out to be quite the barnburner:

European police on alert for Wikileaks founder - Yahoo! News

D.C. involvement, Amazon shuts down their U.S. servers, secret server bunkers in Sweden, rape charges from Interpol, Clinton back tracking, Assange ducking and weaving to evade international police...

I smell a future blockbuster! 😀

yes, folks, just think about it for a minute: a 23 y/o corporal in the Army is apparently the one who is responsible for this? !?

If one 23 y/o corporal can cause this much "damage"...then, we really have a problem.

That was definitely the expectation of the one who started the thread ;-)

Who's now being labeled as gay. McCain will just do anything to keep DADT.

He was gay? Well now that explains everything.

He was reported to be gay on CNN last night. This just re-inforces Gates' premise that DADT is bad in that it fosters a culture of lying and deceit in the military. You have to maintain honesty and honor. Period. Should the military code of ethics be changed to "I will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate others that do (except when it comes to homosexuality)."? I don't think so.

Looks like the US has found a way to shut WikiLeaks down.

The US was today accused of opening up a dramatic new front against WikiLeaks, effectively "killing" its web address just days after Amazon pulled the site from its servers following political pressure.
The whistleblowers' website went offline for the third time in a week this morning, in the biggest threat to its online presence yet.
Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate's committee on homeland security, earlier this week called for any organisation helping sustain WikiLeaks to "immediately terminate" its relationship with them.

They were using Amazon's servers, but then they were dropped and Amazon issued this statement:

"[Amazon Web Services] does not pre-screen its customers, but it does have terms of service that must be followed. WikiLeaks was not following them. There were several parts they were violating. For example, our terms of service state that "you represent and warrant that you own or otherwise control all of the rights to the content? that use of the content you supply does not violate this policy and will not cause injury to any person or entity". It's clear that WikiLeaks doesn't own or otherwise control all the rights to this classified content. Further, it is not credible that the extraordinary volume of 250,000 classified documents that WikiLeaks is publishing could have been carefully redacted in such a way as to ensure that they weren't putting innocent people in jeopardy."

If you ask me it's a slippery slope, this is essentially one of the first virtual censorship instances by an internet provider.

As to the terms of use violation, the information is owned by the US government therefore owned by every US citizen. I understand the corporate stuff, but public documents whether classified or not are the property of the citizenry.

I tend to agree with you. I have mixed feelings about this entire "leak" situation. The seeming increased govt involvement in & censorship of all manner of issues, coupled with the apparent "ownership" suppression of true investigative journalism concerns me in the extreme.

I sense this guy is performing true service on some level. I don't believe every single thing ought to be pimped out on the airwaves and in the news... but I'm suspicious of how the powers-that-be are protesting WAY TOO much and WAY TOO loud.

I told yous guys to break out the foil.....
Wikileaks editor Julian Assange has hinted that references to UFOs will be contained in upcoming cables. In a chat with readers of the Guardian, he writes "in yet-to-be-published parts of the cablegate archive there are indeed references to UFOs." We were originally thinking Wikileaks was the TMZ of international diplomacy?maybe it's actually the Weekly World News?

He's probably just trying to keep it in the news at this point and is using things like this to sell something that will turn out to be a classified military idea to destabilize a country using fake UFO's.

I'm much more frightened by the reaction to this than I am from people outing the truth- however they found it.
