Get some Wheatgrass juice/ mouthwash from For the Health of It and tell him to hold it in his mouth for 5 minutes. It relieves pain.

Some people come out of it with no problems (my kid brother was back to school the next day, the lucky little ______ :cuss:)

However! Some do NOT come out of it well (like ME, for instance). If this is the case for him, tell him to stay on the couch (or in bed, or wherever) as much as possible. I thought it'd be a great idea to walk to the kitchen and get more of my pain meds by myself. Not a good idea.

I passed out face first on the floor on my way, and the impact of the fall caused three dry sockets. Ouch. :banging:

So! Moral of the story, if he's at all weakened or dizzy, have somebody special (like his mama ) to do all the running and fetching for him. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck to him!

He has to stay in bed and do what the doctor says. And the pain meds may cause nausea.

I came through it with no problems and entertained Mama Scooterbug with how chatty I was under aneasthesia.

Scooterbro was a mess - bleeding all over, dry socket, you name it.

The biggest issue is finding mushy food that tastes good IMO.

Campbell's Chicken and Stars and Spaghettios were big winners with me! No long noodles to try to slurp or chew.

If he doesn't mind the cold in cold weather (I had mine done in the Spring when it was warm) those ice pops--the long plastics sleeves that you put in the freezer--are wonderful for numbing the pain and keeping you hydrated.

Likewise, he can try ice cream, but it somehow interacted with the pain meds for me and made me ill. I think that's a person to person issue also.

No straws--the suction will pull the healing wounds.

It does vary by person. I had all four (impacted) out at the same time, but that was over 20 years ago and I am sure the removal practice has evolved. I had a lot of swelling on one side, on the second day, so ice or a bag or frozen peas won't hurt to impact swelling. Keeping his head a little elevated won't hurt either when he is resting. Follow the doctors orders and if he feels it, it will be the second or third day and then it will get better imho. Everyone above has given good advice.

give him a warm cozy bed, and don't feed him for three days, except for some chicken noodle soup every once in a while.

We wore comfy clothes, so as soon as we got home we could go directly to bed propped a certain way (think we had a towel over the pillows to protect them too) and a wastebasket next to us in case we got sick.

I didn't get any prescription pain meds because Mama Scooterbug was worried those would make me sick and I wasn't in enough pain to want them.

I got my operation first thing in the morning and felt well enough to eat a doctor approved afternoon snack and a pretty normal dinner at the table.

I forgot to mention, if he is eating the mushy foods, like noodles, and likes Indian seasonings, turmeric is an excellent pain killer. I gave this tip to a friend, he put it in his cup of noodles, and his mouth went numb. (not sure how much he put in there ) I made this recipe a couple of weekends ago with leftover chicken. I didn't use curry powder, just ginger, turmeric and garlic. The ginger also will help with any tummy upset.

Poor Dargvader!

Just don't let him do what Big D did when he had his wisdom teeth taken out when he was 18(?). He got hungry, ate a steak dinner, and then had to have more stitches.

Kidding aside, hope that Dargvader has minimal pain/discomfort and recovers quickly.

All of these suggestions are good...

I was his age when I had mine removed, all 4 impacted as well, and I was one of the lucky ones that didn't experience any side effects, once the gas wore off (it made me cry. Not giggly, not chatty, just sobbed the whole way home. My poor mother.) No prescription pain meds, just Tylenol. Lots of mushy comfort foods (mac-n-cheese, mashed potatoes, soups, ice cream) I was back in school after one day. I hope it's the same for him! (Well, except for the crying part.)

Medicinal Marijuana.

only if you don't smoke it. Smoking is bad with holes in your gums.

I have a good recipe for soft, gooey brownies. Pretty sure you can replace the oil with green butter.

(Just joking! Sorry JDarg! :D)

comfort foods, popsicles, ice cream, sofa and lots of good movies!!! all I remember about having mine removed was being loopy that first day from the meds.. no complications. He is going to be fine. You are going to need a xanax.

Yes, make yourself some Dargarita's. J/K, nothing to add except pain meds were good for me and didn't make me sick. You could start off with a 1/2 a pill if he needs it and increase dosage from there.

Usually the nausea is from the anesthetic.

My surgery was about 6 years ago, so I don't know if that makes a difference, but I got percocet. Didn't help much, but I think I was a pretty extreme case--looked like a chipmunk that had been in a bar fight...
