Anyone Kindling?

I'm debating keeping one I got for the Christmas. I read the paper at home on my laptop and I read books mostly on the beach. At night, my brain doesn't function well enough to absorb reading and I do mindless things, like watch TV.

Can you share books with other people who aren't in your account? I am trying to learn more about this through amazon threads. I know you can get freebies. Tell me why I should keep it and not buy blue ray DVD's.

Post any tips you might have for us kindlegartners.

You can only book share if you are on the same account.

I do love the kindle though. It's much lighter if you are reading multiple books and like to swap back and forth. It's nice if you finish a book to be able to browse, click, and be reading a new selection in seconds. This has come in real handy for me the last few months, since hospital waiting rooms have been my second home.
Being able to adjust the font size is nice as well. I misplace my reading glasses often. Overall, I'm really happy with the Kindle.

I have a brand new kindle and I wasn't sure about it either but I'm going to give it a go. I do love reading so I figure I'll love it no matter what. anyone I've spoken to who owns one is quite happy with it. I want to check out online newspapers and blogs with it and maybe actually get into the habit of reading some news sources again.

I like the Kindle because you can get books quickly; many are free, or really cheap. No more trees are cut; I don't have lots of books lying around that I wanted to read, but really don't want to keep.
For travel it is great because it is not as heavy as books are--I read two or three books at the same time and they get heavy.

I appreciate y'alls REAL responses. Even after 16 years here I continue to have immediacy yearnings!

This (kindle, nook, whatever) is one of the few things I've 'wanted' AND heard GOOD reports from my beloved A-type-ever-connected-friends who continue the international jet travel lifestyle ... but when we discuss the tactile emotional pleasure aspects of reading (as one example) they ALL end up blessing me for having the balls to risk the BIG ASS $ LIFE against the 'checking out / reduction' lifestyle choice of prematurely (their words) moving to the beach.

I'm SOOOO happy and thankful for our exquisite "new" SoWal Community LIbrary! My still on-the-treadmill-buy-it-when-it crosses-your-mind friends have forgotten the joys of a community lending library (and librarians).

i'm a librarian and love my kindle-we are not a dying breed lol. we have entered the cyber era with enthousiasm. the print on my kindle which i often put in a ziplock bag to take to beach/pool etc means i can read in glare without glasses. we're looking at more downloadable books at my library along with our collection of databases for online articles.

I got the Sony Reader for Christmas and I can't get it to download the account to get books. I've registered, but it says it is not connecting to wifi.....it connected to wifi to register???? I think I will love it if I can get it the damn thing to work. It works at my sons house on his router, but not mine. I am confused......:idontno:

I use the Kindle App on my laptop and like it. I have to take my laptop everywhere for work travel so it doesn't make a lot of sense to get a second reader YET. Now when the Ipad increases its work capabilities, I will likely switch to it and leave the laptop mostly at home.

Yippee!! Success!! Only took me four days to figure it all out, but by cracky, I finally did it! I'm into the 20th page of my first book. I think I may like this thing.

I can definitely see how the kindle is a great invention when space is limited (military, remote schools, long trips), but I choose by books by cover, mood, shared from friends, and what looks interesting when I open it randomly and read a page at the library book sale.

Not to mention the Kindle doesn't work so well in the bathtub.

Yeah, the bathtub thing could be a deal for some. I never take baths any more though since I'm so old and fat. I do see what you're saying too though about the actual book experience..that may take some getting used to, but I think for some (like me), I might be encouraged to read more since I don't have to go the bookstore, etc.

They definitely have their place - some inventor/philanthropist was on Colbert and said that their value to education in remote/developing areas is insane - it means a school system of 100 kids with $100 solar powered laptops can have access to a 10,000+ volume library.

I imagine the military folks love them too.

I have had my kindle 2 for a year and a half now and absolutely love it! With a special feedbooks HTML download, I have instant access to a library of hundreds of thousands of free books!

Scooty, with the Kindle, apparently you can preview a book without buying it, not to mention online reviews right at your fingertips.

You hold it up above the water - or set it on the edge of the tub if you need to take a sip of wine. ;-)

Well, I decided to keep mine. I do enjoy reading and it will force me to read more books so I don't have to go to the library or store. I figure I can use it on planes, appointments....etc.

Here is a Favorite tip from Kindle owners to new Kindle owners. - kindle Discussion Forum I found on Amazon. It may help others who have different ebooks, too.

Here's a good tip: Download calibre to organize your books. (This can be used on any system)

 Well, I gotta tell you, it's easier than reading a book in the shower... Bah-dum-bum. ;-)

Actually, I read books in the tub often... I'm big on bubble baths, that's my "me time". Since I love to read more than just about anything, it kinda just goes hand in hand. 😀 Makes me a Happy Kit.

Naw..no smut....yet. I just finished Nora Ephron's "I Feel Bad About My Neck". Kinda funny, but she ended talking about death and Lord knows I'm confronted with that enough. There was one entertaining chapter titled "I Hate my Purse" which was pretty danged funny. It was cheap though and only 100 pages. I'm now on to Jill Conner Browne's "First Big Ass Novel". She always makes me laugh. And she doesn't talk about death much.
