Iowa Legislator Seeks to Criminalize Cocktails

The Food and Drug Administration can ban caffeinated alcoholic beverages such as Four Loko, but it cannot stop bartenders from mixing Red Bull with vodka, coffee with Irish whiskey, or cola with rum. Fortunately, Iowa state Sen. Brian Schoenjahn (R-Arlington) has proposed a bill that would close this dangerous gap by making it a misdemeanor for any business with a liquor license to "manufacture for sale, sell, offer or keep for sale, import, distribute, transport, or possess any caffeinated alcoholic beverage." The bill defines "caffeinated alcoholic beverage" as "any beverage containing more than one-half of one percent of alcohol by volume, including alcoholic liquor, wine, and beer, to which caffeine is added." Hence it apparently applies not only to drinks with a noticeable caffeine kick but also to coffee-flavored liqueurs with detectable amounts of the stimulant, such as Kahlua or Tia Maria, and any cocktails made with them, such as Black Russians or Mudslides. In addition to jail time and fines, violators would face revocation (not just suspension) of their liquor licenses, and therefore loss of their livelihoods?a pretty harsh penalty for following the instructions in a Mr. Boston book.

Hands off my Kahlua! :boxing:

This is just dumb. Does he know those restaurants/bars sell coffee, tea, and caffeine sodas?

I think any restrictions on alcohol intake will be met with strong opposition by our current house speaker.

I'm not sure he's a mix kinda guy, your holiness. He might like it neat. Now if it were a restriction on self-tanner,tanning beds or Kleenex, then this bill would be moot.

Jesus loves me this I know, cause the Bible tells me so...

Here is another proposed law that I don't think we need.:
New measure would bar doctors from asking patients if they own guns - News - Northwest Florida Daily News

Any Republican out there who can explain to me why these Republican legislators seem to be filing bills that increase govt. intrusion into our everyday lives? :idontno:
With hard to enforce laws and big fines?

How is this any different from, say something like this:

Am I missing something? I don't care what my doctor asked me. I am free to respond or not, or tell him whatever I want to tell him. But banning him from asking me questions in an appointment that is supposed to be private is a huge step on not only my health-care, but his right to free speech. If the Gov. dosen't belong in our health care they certainly don't need to to tell people what they can say or what they can't in a private meeting between me and my doctor.

Not being able to have a little 7-up with my crown is unAmerican.

Both are stupid uses of a politicians time and the tax payers money.

I completely agree actually, but I figured I'd argue from NDY's point of view. Independent of racial or religious discrimination I believe a doctor should be able to refuse patients based on any criteria, it's his business, he has that right. (Including refusing welfare and medicare patients.)

Since I don't get your point at all, I think it's safe to say you are not arguing from my point of view. :idontno:

Actually, it was because of an incident in Ocala that the bill was filed. A doctor did exactly that - tossed out patients from his practice who refused to answer his question about guns in the home. And the Republican response is to file a bill criminalizing the question. Frankly, I don't get it. And please don't say that proves my point, because I don't think it does.

Which makes this action even more stupid and frivolous.
