Hope you have enough money to pay for the gas to get you there and back. It may be higher by tomorrow.[/QUOTE]

That, I think, is going to become the norm Andy because folks like our Governor Rick Scott (whom I am thinking you may have voted for --but, I could be wrong!) believes more in the power of Big Oil than in modern solution to our nations transporatation woes.

Feel free to check my blog for the links to the budget for this upcoming year. Rick Scott proclaims budget cuts across the board for everyone, while he adds 91 new jobs to his staff and a little more to the lottery fund (i'm scarcastically believing that the lottery needs it more than our little children). I am sick of this.
Hear that the cuts were made to EVEN START yesterday. Now those parents who dropped out of school cannot go to school to get a free GED while someone watches their little one. I woner what will happen to those kids, because obviously those parents are going to have to have jobs to feed them.....as those funds got cut too. my blog In The 45th Year Of Life

Did you notice the growth in that graph? Our social services, education system, and general government spending growth haven't been getting squeezed over the last eight years. Especially education spending which has seen dramtic increases over the last four years under Charlie Crist. I'm sure the system has slack that can be reeled in without bringing the poor starving masses to their knees.
how many teachers pay raises in the last 5 years??

None AFAIK. But considering how much they make I don't think they can complain. A lot of folks aren't getting raises or worse getting laid off. If you have a job enjoy it and remember once the good times are back again and we have surpluses the perks will follow.

So teacher shouldn't have to pay for supplies and stuff for their classrooms, right?

Two if memory serves me correctly. Insurance contributions have increased each of the last three. And now a contribution to retirement. But still not as bad as I have seen it in the private sector. I keep thinking about all of these guys that promised that teachers should be making a 100K a year though.

The interesting thing I have heard though is that since current teachers are frozen on the salary schedule, say they have 10 years of experience but are stuck at 7 years due to no raises, new hires with 10 years experience are going in at the 10 year mark, making more than current. Have not run up on anyone to verify this though, but have been told by some teachers this is happening. I did not think we counted more than five years prior experience when hiring. Maybe Mark will speak to this.

Car is packed--picking up 2 Sowallers very early tomorrow. Checked spelling on all my placards--don't want Fox embarrasing us! Actually I hope Fox is there so I can lead the chant against them.

This is sooooo exciting! Will report tomorrow on the progress! Let's see..Moubarrak, Khadaffi, and Scott (sounds like an international law firm) ....One, two, and three, down they all will go ! 😀

God save and bless America's dying middle class!

Way more Democrats than Republicans in Florida. Scott appears to be doing pretty much what he said he was going to do. Wonder how he won.

Democrats/ Republicans or independent thinkers. I say there are more independent thinkers, he just picked up 50,000 more than Alex did.

Considering all the money we've been throwing at education I don't see why they should.

I really need to have the article talking about how state higher ed funding is something like $10K less per student than it was in the 1980s once you account for both inflation and a failure of the state to increase funding at the same rate as enrollment growth.

According to recent census data overall population growth totaled about 17% over the last decade.

Lets look at this more reasonably. If we can find enrollment data for the last ten years, we can compare that with just the state's budgetary spending over the same period, and I can factor in inflation. Then we can get a feel for just how "underfunded" our public K-12 schools really are.
