Why No Looters in Japan?

I was talking to a friend yesterday and compared the earthquake in Japan to Katrina when he said well there's no looting in Japan. I was caught off guard at the reality of this statement.

Sugar coat it how you want but there's definitely a fundamental difference in attitudes. Instead of stealing people in Japan are coming together helping their community. Asking not what others can do for them but rather what they can do to help themselves.

And he knows this how?

I think he reads and watches TV. I didn't confirm that though.

Maybe their government is actually getting relief supplies to them, instead of flying over and waving.

I love how regressives feel the need to compare every disaster to Katrina. I believe there is a small amount of looting taking place in Japan but nothing on the scale of other diasters around the world, we will just have to wait and see.

Why do you believe there is looting? Have you seen or read about it? Why do you think it wouldn't be on the same scale as other disasters? That's really why I posted to get others feedback/opinions as to the differences.

You have to admit it's difficult to comprehend people not trying to take advantage of a bad situation since it seems like the norm here nowadays. Heck we see looting when our sports team loses.

And, let me guess, he watches Fox News. You may want to get back to us on the details/facts of his knowledge of the internal situation in Japan.

Your guess is as good as mine. I guess we can sit back and wait to see if looting videos pop up in the next couple days but I think we would have already seen them reported by the Western journalists already on the ground.

This would be a good story for the networks.

Maybe it has something to do with their religion.

Not necessarily just their religion. The Asian culture in general. You should know. You served in that corner of the world.

I would be interested in Andrew's response to BeachSi02's post.

The community is more important than the individual. I think that's it in a nutshell.

Jump on in, the water's just fine.

So, our culture promotes the idea that looting is ok. I would agree with that. How do we change the perceptions? Should we try?

I guess you're being facetious about me serving, but I do know a little about Japanese culture. The crime rate is said to be very low even in places like Tokyo. I've heard that a woman in Tokyo can go to the store at 2:00AM in her nightgown and nobody will bother her. I also get the impression that they are a bunch of perverts and there is no stigma against things like extreme violent porn, underage sex and the like.

I have to to totally agree also--"looting" is very American--I mean look at what the super rich are doing to America's middle class on a daily basis now.

It is in (some of) our blood. After somebody dies, you have to change the locks of their house immediately. You can be sure that at least one friend or relative who has a key will clean the place out.

Exactly. So where did we go wrong? We went from Leave it to Beaver to Beavis & Butthead.

Something else very different about Japan, they very much believe in shame. I think that is long since gone in the US.
