Ryan to unveil budget plan that cuts $6 trillion in 10 years – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs
Very savvy political calculus...it eliminates Medicare but not for those already on it or those close to being eligible.
Old folks vote so that constituency will not be affected.
No new taxes and you get to keep the same government subsidized healthcare you enjoy.

The jury is out on whether it is politically savvy but it is humane. Those on the plan or close to being on it are provided for and everyone else has ample time to make other arrangements. And the block grants for Medicaid is an important first step in turning this program over to the states.

I wonder if the budget and the deficit fiasco would be different if Congress had some union - trained negotiators:idontno:

To me it is political genius, old folks who vote in higher percentages are unscathed. It doesn't kick in for ten years so there goes balancing the budget.
As far as being humane, buying individual health insurance when you are 80 years old may be a stretch.
FWIW, the guillotine was designed to be humane, too. :idontno:
As far as Rick Scott running the Medicaid program I see a Carl Hiaassen novel.:lol:

I believe the plan is for private plans to compete for the recipient's benefit, much like medicare advantage. But we have over 10 years to prepare for the eventuality.
As to Rick Scott running medicaid, he can't be worse than Bush and Obama.😀

So we once again won't be addressing anything the military does. If you don't then they will fill that hole left by Medicare/Medicaid very quickly.
I'd like to know how much that campaign video cost the taxpayers?
Once again we are to believe someone from the party that is primarily responsible for the last two massive bumps on that graph?

CBO: Seniors Would Pay Much More For Medicare Under Ryan Plan - Kaiser Health News
Interesting analysis...
Seniors and the disabled would pay sharply more for their Medicare coverage under a new plan by House Republicans aimed at curbing the nation?s growing deficit, a Congressional Budget Office analysis shows.
For example, by 2030, under the plan, typical 65 year olds would be required to pay 68 percent of the total cost of their coverage, which includes premiums, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs, according to CBO. That compares with the 25 percent they would pay under current law, CBO said.
Interesting analysis...

And the caterwalling starts! Did any of you that don't want to cut spending bother watching Paul Ryan's presentation of his budget? He made sure that the most knowlegeable on any part of it made that particular presentation. For instance, an M.D. Representative presented the medical portion of the budget. Paul Ryan means his budget as a starting point not a finality, and it is a good one, IMO. But then I'm merely a guy who has worked all his life and is now living in the lap of luxury.:sarc:

In addition I believe his contributors show his real motives:

Kind of reads like his plan doesn't it?
First we don't affect the current or soon to be recipients. We free up all that money to dump into the private insurance sector which will need to invest the money for long term expenses. While at the bottom are the folks that will reap profits regardless of the outcome of this "plan".
I'll remind you that this is the same party that attempted to bring you "privatized social security" and had that plan passed the elderly homeless population would have hit a record about a year and a half ago.
You may hate government and think bureaucrats are the devils minions, but imagine trying to work with a private corporation whose policies have the rule of law backing them.

My friend, Paul Ryan's plan for Medicare will not cost you one red cent.
You will be free to enjoy the benefits of government sponsored and taxpayer supported Medicare.
Some dare not call it socialism.

Fact-checking the Ryan budget plan
"Ryan on Tuesday suggested he was going to get rid of ?these accounting tricks, all these budget gimmicks? in writing his budget plan. So how did he do?
His budget presentation shows a scary-looking graph depicting an ocean of red stretching out into the future. The graph is titled, ?We are in a Spending-Driven Debt Crisis? and says it is based on ?CBO?s Alternative Fiscal Scenario.? But then when you actually look at one of CBO papers that outlines this scenario, it turns out that the scary scenario is also based on taxes being too low, not just spending being too high.
he alternative fiscal scenario also accounts for other aspects of current law, such as assuming discretionary spending will match the rate of growth of the nation?s economy (gross domestic product). But a large part of the ocean of red comes from the revenue side of the equation, not just the spending side, as Ryan implies.
Ryan also claims that his proposal has the imprimatur of the Congressional Budget Office. The budget document declares: ?According to the Congressional Budget Office, this budget charts a path to complete balance. By 2040, the CBO estimates that this budget will produce annual surpluses and begin paying down the national debt.?
though Ryan relies on the CBO to vouch for his plan, he appears to ignore CBO estimates that a repeal of the health care law would lead to an increase in the deficit. Instead, a substantial part of his claimed deficit reduction ? $1.4 trillion over the next 10 years ? comes from repealing the health care law. Where do those numbers come from? Ryan does not explain, and his spokesman did not respond to a query.
In one of the more dubious assertions, Ryan relies on a report from the conservative Heritage Foundation?s Center for Data Analysis to claim his budget would result in a gusher of jobs.
The Heritage uses ?dynamic? budget analysis, which assumes such things as lower tax rates and less government spending will result in a burst of economic growth and thus more tax revenues, higher wages and more jobs. There has been a long dispute among economists about the actual effect ? and whether it can be accurately measured. At first glance, this Heritage model comes up with some numbers that seem rather strange ? in fact, so strange that Ryan does not even claim them in his presentation.
For instance, the Heritage analysis claims that the unemployment rate would hit 2.8 percent in 2021, which is a rate that has never been achieved. ....."
The Pinocchio Test
As with President Obama?s budget, the Ryan budget plan relies on dubious assertions, questionable assumptions and fishy figures. The ideas may be bold, but the budget presentation falls short of his claim that he is getting rid of budget gimmicks.
