Twelve of our presidents owned slaves--eight of them while serving as president.
The only evidence that Grant owned slaves is an 1859 letter freeing one--it seems he had control over slaves his wife inherited.

Thomas Jefferson, who told us that it was self-evident that all men are created equal owned slaves.
The Father of our Country owned slaves.

What a shameful legacy.

I find it comforting that such great men had flaws and were not perfect. It gives hope to us all that in spite of our shortcomings we also can achieve greatness.

I don't find it comforting at all. The only consolation is in knowing that today's society is more highly evolved morally and intellectually, and in that respect, most of us are superior to our founding fathers. If greatness is so important, then I think new priorities are in order. Throughout history, people labeled as "great" have done terrible things to other people.

That is because they were human.

I don't care what they were. We need to condemn their destructive tendencies and leave that **** behind us.
