Harmless fun?
What is your take? Do you allow or take your children to roll yards or believe it encourages children to break other laws? I am amazed at how many parents in my town load the kids up, buy the supplies, and take them to houses to roll. Just wondering if that is the new norm....

hmmmmmmmmmmm...... I remember doing this as a kid a time or two but never with parental permission or assistance! I would say that "trashing" someone's yard is not the right thing to do and that parents should not approve or help kids do something that is wrong.

On the other hand, when my BFF turned 50 last year, several of us grown ups rolled her yard with TP and pink and black streamers. She deserved it. And she loved it.

I never condoned it, but my kids did it. One time, they soaped screens too. That was the last straw. I made them clean every shred of TP and clean every screen while the neighbor (their friend's mom) and I sat on her porch and watched. Cured 'em.

My mom only condoned once, of course she also assisted that time as well, it was a major case of payback from a boy that tp'd our house; she had some old school ideas like forking the yard with plastic forks, sugar on the doorstep to attract ants, shaving cream under door handles-in hindsight, she must've been really PO'd!

I know a mom that lets her daughter "fork" yards. That is so strange to me! I had never even heard of that before. I know my kids have papered some friends houses but not with me or approved by me. I understand it is all in good fun, but not fun to clean up!

Is "rolling" a yard the same as tping? I've never heard this expression.

Kt - I'm with you - I thought rolling a yard was when you tried to get the lumps out of the lawn!

TP-ing a house with your parents is pretty lame - both from a social and parenting standpoint.

We used to do it for homecoming etc, but a big part of it was keeping it secret from the adults.

Kids were the ones who did it, and the ones who cleaned it up.

we called it "rolling" in my hometown (birmingham).

and yes, I believe it was football season around Alabama-Auburn football game time! and maybe homecoming or maybe no real reason. and we didn't clean it up - that would be an admission we weren't prepared to make!

We didn't clean up the houses we tped, we had to clean up if our houses got tped.

Homecoming, Halloween, and payback were usually the reasons.

Our last house got rolled on a regular basis. We lived in a neighborhood full of adolescent boys, and we had the only adolescent girl. I'm not a fan.

I grew up in town on a fairly busy corner. Needless to say...our house was usually the prime target for toilet paper!! I learned over the years, that it is much quicker to burn the tp out of the trees....after MUCH practice! Sis and I always had to do the cleaning up...as if we ASKED for this to happen!

The best, most creative, pain in the bu** event was:
One year, after everyone discarded their Christmas trees by the side of the road, a group of boys collected them and deposited them in our front yard!!! We had Christmas trees all in the yard, on the porch, UP in the pecan trees....it was hysterica! AND a mess! We even made the front page of the local newspaper!

Confession to my sister (seacrest girl):

Some of our tp events MAY have been in retaliation for a little toilet paper rolling on my end! 😀. But thanks for helping me clean it up!!

Now, that doesn't apply to the Christmas trees -- I had never done anything to those boys. I think we were targeted because of the high visibility of our house. Plus, they knew our mother wouldn't be mad!

Our mom was never mad when it happened to us or when we did it to others! It's really harmless fun in my opinion!

My father taught at one of the high schools and our house got "rolled" every weekend. He was always able to find out who did it and he had his ways of making the culprits pay, I never knew what the penance was. I have been quilty of rolling a few yards during my middle school years🙂.
