That sounds so cool! The hair would have been standing on the back of my neck and my arms also. The housing projects are all over the place around here. One right behind my work. We heard five loud pops one afternoon while at work and there are a bunch of school students that walk home behind our complex. Someone had been shot back there, driveby shooting and was sitting on the ground bleeding from their leg. Typical everyday Memphis. Nothing new here. Would have loved to see that house. Too bad it wasn't a part of a haunted tour and on a historic registry.

30A, we usually spend the night in NOLA on the way to FLA., went two weeks before Katrina last year and stayed in Gulfport instead. I miss NOLA! Any suggestions if we decide to stay there this year? ARE there places to stay? I'm gonna have a whole carload with me, so it needs to be economical...Haven't checked any places yet, just thought of it while reading this thread.

Destindreamin, how long a drive is it for you to the panhandle? it takes us 8 1/2 to 9 hours from Memphis. We pretty much drove nonstop last year except for stopping for gas and lunch.

Well, lady, it depends on if I'm driving or mr. dd. If I am, it's 11 hours, if it's mr. dd, it's 12! ;-) Like I said, we usually spend the night in NOLA, but since I've got such a carload this time, we may try to find somewhere more affordable--gotta save $$ for alcohol and food at the beach! We usually always drive straight home--all 11 hours in one day. We stop on the way there because we usually leave in the afternoon after working in the morning.

No matter how you go from Texas, it takes FOREVER to get through Louisiana!

I sure wish I could get my husband to leave a day early. I would like to leave Friday afternoon after dropping the dog at the vet but he won't leave until the next morning. Gulfport might be cheaper. Don't know whether Metairie would be or not! That's what I feel about Alabama. And almost the same when we drove through Destin over into Panama City Beach.

I suggest you tough it out and drive straight through. You might try I-20 all the way to Jackson then south on 49 to I-10. Try to avoid I-10 through south La at all costs! If you need to stop, maybe Hattiesburg or Jackson would be better choices.

I think you may be right. I guess I can get some of the kids to drive too. Like I said, save $$ for alcohol!;-) Lady, I don't think there's much of Gulfport left from what I've seen :( I am going to South La. the end of June for a short weekend visit to an uncle in Sulphur. He's still working on repairs from Rita. I generally go there down 49 from Shreveport.

Yes, avoid the I-49 route. You will enter traffic reminsicent of Bombay at rush hour in Baton Rouge and certainly it isn't pretty near NOLA. You are right, we went to the Mississippi coast last weekend and it is still a wreck. Some of the hotels near the Interstate may be open now, but it is so overrun with contracting crews and displaced people. While I think everyone should see the wreck, maybe not on the way to the beach.

I don't know about Gulfport pre hurricane last year, but many years ago we went to the panhandle and spent one night overnight in Gulfport when my son was around 2 or 3. I remember the beach was not very clean back then. Maybe the Mississippi beaches do not have the white sand beaches like Alabama and Florida. Their beach must be more like Louisiana's beaches. 30A Skunkape, the beach at Cypremort Point in Louisiana was brown. Is that true sand color for that area?

What about I-10 from Houston over to Sulphur--it's by Lake Charles? Or I can always go through the East Tx. Piney Woods and come out somewhere around Beaumont and skip over to Sulphur. Thanks for your advice!
