Apparently Tide detergent is a huge black market item now. It has gotten so bad that stores are considering keeping it behind the counter as they do with certain OTC meds.
Why? At one point in hubby's career he was general manager (the terminology for vice president at his employer) for their chemical business. While he was developing a dry carpet cleaning system, he learned that Tide was the flagship detergent for P&G. So when our daughter had a science project in the 7th grade, he told her to compare Tide to All, the cheaper detergent that we were using.
She tested stains for mustard, grass stains, red wine, red Gatorade, and many other products that are difficult to remove. Tide won in every case.
So I guess that Tide is so effective and so expensive (as compared to All) that its street value is enhanced.
Note to self: every time I see an ad that says Tide is on sale, I should stock up. I guess I should keep it in a safe. LOL. Just crazy.

Unfortunately, Tide isn't being stolen because of how well it cleans. Most drug addicts I have known haven't been too worried if they can get a stain out. Here's the reason why Tide is being shoplifted in record numbers:
Because Tide is so expensive, junkies steal a bottle and trade it for a small piece of crack. The crack dealer then takes that bottle to a crooked store owner, who buys it cheaper than he could from his legit supplier. The store owner then sells it for regular price, but has a higher profit margin. Because there's no way to track where the bottle came from, there's no risk in getting caught.
It's sad that things have come to this point. Who would have ever thought there'd be a black market for laundry detergent????

Interesting - I thought they were stealing it to make meth.

I'm a Tide junkie for sure. I have tried every other brand but nothing else cleans like Tide - at least in my experience!
Had to switch to the Free & Gentle (free of dyes & perfumes) - but it works just as well.
Is this a Tide commercial or what?
I hear there are many items on the black market these days - all over the world.

Used to be that NY strips, T-bones and Ribeyes were the shoplifters choice to trade for crack, but I guess the market has changed:shock:Seems a lot easier to stick a steak down your baggy pants than a big bottle of Tide.
Who knew?
