Auctioning off of Libertyland rides

:( For all you Memphis Sowal people, Libertyland, our only amusement park here closed down back in November. City groups and Libertyland have been having a battle over ownership of the rides. Come tomorrow, all rides will be auctioned off! The famous wooden roller coaster the Zippin Pippin, which Elvis Presley rode repeatedly, the Rebellion, the Revolution roller coaster, the Old Hickory Log Flume, my alltime favorite, and the Kamakazi. The only thing being spared is the Carousel. Looks like the end of the annual Mid South Fair for Memphis as they are wanting to change the fairgrounds into either apartments or houses. As far as I know, the fair will be here for this year in September as their website showed dates for the fair. But after that. Makes me sad! Always looked forward to the fair.

I knew they were closing Libertyland, but I hadn't heard about ending the Mid-South Fair. This is the 150th anniversary of the fair. It runs for 10 days at the end of September, and it is such a fun way to spend a fall weekend. I've judged homemade ice cream making contests there before. Fun, hokey things like that-I'm going to miss it!:( :(

MKH, just wondering if there will be another fair after this year. They keep talking about what they are going to do with the fairground property and mentioning making it a retail area or housing! So I do not know where they would have it if they get rid of the fairgrounds! Hope this does not happen as I look forward to going to this every year with my son! Never mind that I am 46 but I love to ride certain rides out there still! Nothing that goes upside down mind you. I usually end up having to take dramamine before going anyway for motion sickness! This link talks about the auction!

Like I said, I hadn't heard about the fair closing down after this year. I'll start asking around and see what other people have heard.

And I just love to go to the fair for the food! The Pronto Pups, the funnel cakes, all of it I just love. I always spend time in the beer tent, too. They usually have 3 or 4 big screen TVs with each one tuned to a different SEC game. It's wild being there with fans from lots of different teams!

I'm like you, I have no idea where they could have it if they turn the fairgrounds into retail or housing. I go to class at night at CBU right across the street from it; I'll let you know what I can find out.

Please do. I just know I have heard that mentioned, more than once. The traffic I did not enjoy having to drive in to get to the fairgrounds. It is horrible. At one time they mentioned Shelby Farms. The Starry Nights that was at Shelby Farms moved south to Desoto County and our hockey team moved to the Desoto Civic Center.

I dont think the fair is going to be affecfted....It's a completely different entity all together...I wonder who is going to get the ZippinPipin....That was Elvis' favorite ride!

Blair, I know they are still having the fair this year as the dates show September 21st to October 1st. But there was also discussion about the fairgrounds being sold for retail development. I hope it won't be affected. When I go on the Midsouth Fair sight there is nothing showing about ticket prices, anything right now about the fair, everything you click on shows info coming! I think they should have kept the Zippin Pippin since it was Elvis' favorite ride! And I didn't want the Old Hickory Log Ride gone! That is my favorite ride! We'll find out. I am sure something will be said on the news about the auction today!
