Remember catching these glowing bugs and keeping them in a jar, after poking holes in the lid with an ice pick, only to wake up the next morning to be disappointed that they didn't make it through the night? Still, that didn't prevent you (me!) from doing the same thing again that night.
I'd noticed the last couple of summers that you'd be hard pressed to find many lightning bugs, let alone enough to keep one another company in a little jar. At least, that's how it seemed here in Illinois. But THIS summer...they are everywhere! It's kind of neat to see just how many are lighting up all over the place. Brings back those summertime memories.
I'm just curious--what happened? Why so few for a few years and now all of a sudden so many? Is it like this in other areas, or just here in the humid, sticky Midwest?

Does anyone remember the Book Sam and the Firefly? I loved that book to death...I still have it around here somewhere...it was about an owl named Sam and a lightning bug that got in lots of trouble!
I kept so many books from when the kids were little. We all have so many happy memories around them. It's cool now to watch my daughter love those books still. Now she's collecting them for her classroom.

Well.. some girlie-meanies used to squish them, and wear the glowing parts as "rings" on their fingers, attached to a piece of grass.
Then they'd chase their poor younger sister (whose name might have been Amy) around with them..Memories.
I have sisters too, I understand.

When the cousins and I would go and spend the night with my grandmother, she would give us each a Mason jar and say, "Go catch lightning bugs." Think she was trying to get us out of her hair. Destindreamin, you need to try this the next time you have the grandkids.

Eric Carle has a book, "The Very Lonely Firefly" that is really good, and it lights up at the end!
He's one of my favorites, along with Shel Silverstein.

2 thoughts - we were just commenting over the weekend that we were seeing the first lightning bugs of the season.
i was in a book club when i was young, mom signed me up as a newborn. i looooved my books, they were immaculate, and i read them thousands of times. mom meticulously saved them all in boxes. when my sis was born and got older - no interest whatsoever in reading. she either drew all over my books, or ripped the pages out and ate them.
thank you for the fond memories - i had forgot about the eaten books. she's lucky i worship the ground she walks on !
