okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

Oh, Lordy. Talk about some old biddy wenches... it will be great... and we'll have such a bad attitude about all the newcomers on the board and give them a what fer... we'll probably get banned a lot for our wonderful colorful language and general buttholism.

My new favorite phrase!!! A genuine "Tootsieism"!

:lolabove: I love it. Two new words tonight. Buttholism and Tootsieism. :floor:
Wonder if there will be a patch or pill for the Buttholism.

]I want to be free[/B]. :clap_1: I don't want to smell like an ashtray anymore. I don't want to hear my sister yell at me because the baby smells like cigarattes after I hold him. I don't want to run out the door in my pajamas and a coat because I am out of cigarettes.

Quitting smoking is very freeing (but very hard!!!) I miss it every day.

Patch. Don't cut them in half, and follow the directions to the letter.

Wellbutrin.

Completely change your routine. Instead of getting up and having coffee, newspaper, and smoke, I jumped straight into the shower and slapped a fresh patch on. Then didn't stop moving- drank my coffee and cleaned out a drawer, folded laundry, etc.

Pick a day to quit (I picked January 23 that year- didn't want to be part of the New Year resolution madness). A week before you quit, write down every single cigarette you smoke- and where you were and the time. You will see a pattern, and you can start planning your routine changes. Also, quitting in the winter was great- I didn't really want to stand outside in the cold to smoke. Frigid temps are a good motivator.

I will say it again- Patch. No gum. Patch. Don't cheat it.

Even though I didn't smoke in the car when the kids were in it, I loved to smoke and drive when they weren't in it. So I would take an apple with me- and became addicted to eating apples in the car. I still am!:floor: I have to toss an apple core out somewhere everyday!

A support group helped. I found a good one through my doctor. We met once a week for 12 weeks and biatched and moaned, and gradually the biatching and moaning turned into pats on the back and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

So good luck Mango- it was the hardest thing I ever did. But you will know when it is time. You will wake up and just say "I sick of this this shee-it!"

Thanks Jenay. Grayt tips. :clap_1: I will look for a support group. I am at that point now where I am just sick it. Not to mention that New York has a $1.00 surcharge on cigarettes. I rather spend the money on my nephews. Every time I buy a carton, I think of all the cute little outfits I could have bought instead.

Mango, I'll be sending all my willpower your way to help you stop smoking.

yup, jdarg, that was a great post.

Tootsie, I guess we don't have to worry about being normal at a normal weight... buttholism? That's a relief (the part about not having to worry about being normal I mean, not the buttholism...)

OK...back to this quitting smoking thing. mr. dd just reminded me that ciggies are going up $1 per pack Jan. 1. This is just the last straw! Then, on the way to work, I started thinking I could probably buy a place in SoWal for all the money I spend on cigs.
I have a feeling my life is about to dramatically change on Jan...8 is it, Miss Kitty?
No smokie, no eatie.

I must admit that I have totally gone off my diet/exercise/health-oriented regimen. The stress of the holidays and other personal issues have taken their toll. Yesterday I made up my mind to be good, but one family member pitched a tantrum and took me down the slippery slope.

Much of the stuff that's on the South Beach Diet is so high in sodium and fat that my blood pressure and cholesterol are up and my doctor is very concerned. I know someone who has lost weight on WW and kept it off, but I just can't deal with the points thing.

As soon as I get over my funk, I plan to just eat healthily, walk at least 3 times a week, and not drink any alcohol during the week (this won't start until after 1/1/07 :funn: ).

It is not the drug you said. It is Chantix...go to www.chantix.com.
Our therapist here at the clinic took it for three months, she quit smoking after about 3 weeks...she took the last pill in middle of November and has not smoked since...has not even had the urge to smoke. Talk to your doctor about this new drug....it just came out in like April or May. We  you and want you to stop smoking! Don't worry....we will come see you in the padded room:biggrin:

Maybe I misunderstood the book, but I thought they were all about no carbs. My doc freaked when I told him I was snacking on their recommended cheese and nuts (due to the fat and salt content).
