okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

Chewy Apricot-Almond Granola Bars

Have you ever tried the granola in vanilla yogurt? Sounds like it might be satisfying.

I haven't tried the yogurt with granola sundaes yet (I hear it's nice to layer it like a sundae) but just today decided I would add that to my diet because I'm not a big milk drinker (though I love cheese). I've heard the new probiotic yogurts by Dannon are great so I'll see if they have a vanilla yogurt.

Frankly, now that I've made the exercise/diet changes, I'm hoping it's a lifestyle/health change and it really doesn't seem that hard anymore (and I'm really going to try harder to like the training with the trainer -- I like her so much). I eat light during the day and have a very nice dinner, including wine. The differences is I eat just a regular portion of the meat/fish/poultry/pasta/whatever and then lots and lots of vegetables followed by fruit. I always feel very full when I finish dinner and then usually don't snack before bed. So, I think honest portion control is part of my new diet (so it really isn't a diet in the "lose weight" sort of way. It's more of a diet in the "eat healthier and use portion control" sort of way. I have a feeling I was eating much more than I thought I was (e.g., lots of second servings). I also cook up things like salmon patties and leave them in the fridge cooked so I have them for lunch on a wrap with lots of vegetables.

I think I was just so busy for the past decade with young children and a full-time job that I put everyone else first. But Oprah Magazine (my favorite magazine) reminded me to put my health as the number 1 time priority and that's what I did. And so did this thread. It hasn't taken time away from the family, it has taken a tiny bit of time away from work but I'm just more efficient or dropping things that aren't critical (and no one misses them, frankly, so I guess they really weren't critical).

Anyone have any really good healthy recipes?

 I just saw it today - the Pandora's thread. too bad. so sad. I don't have a bit of sympathy for anyone who walks into a restaurant and expects them to cook for them after they have stopped taking customers, because they are a local.. sorry. there. I said it. I know, wrong thread...

The best yogurt I have had is Stoneyfield....hope it is spelled correctly. Not so sickly sweet and the vanilla is really good. The downside is I have to drive 30 miles to the nearest Publix to pruchase it!:bang:

OK, I talked to my trainer about the sickly sweet probiotic Dannon yogurt (even too sweet for me) and she said that there's a Kefir (consistency of a milkshake) that is plain and probiotic (I believe probiotic means lots of bacteria that's very good for you) and you can add you're own flavorings and sweeteners. She said you can get it at Whole Foods, but maybe that healthy food place in Destin would have it (maybe even Publix).

Publix does carry it. FBB drinks it all the time. I know it comes in peach, raspberry, and plain flavor. There may be blueberry as well.

Y'all read all 52 pages? Do you think if I read them I'll be motivated too? I guess it would be a lot like laying on the sofa watching a work out video. ( I've done that a few times )

Really, if not fitting into most of my clothes and basically everything I put on looks like sheet, that should be motivating enough!!! I am so there!!!

Starting Jan 1 or 2nd right?

My jeans are soo tight right now and I refuse to buy bigger ones!
I have been thinking about ordering the nutri system food but I probably won't. I have a big birthday coming up and have 60 days to get at least 5 of the 10 lbs off I want.
Weight Watchers were meeting at Good News. Does anyone know if they still are?

How about listing our favorite low-cal meals/snacks so when we're hungry we get something low-cal and good for us. So, it means stocking our pantries/fridges with good things. My favorites things that don't make me feel like I'm dieting - just eating well -- are:

  • shrimp cocktail
  • peppered turkey
  • activia light vanilla yogurt with berries and home-made granola I made (will share recipe soon)
  • tuna fish with pineapple, walnuts and a tiny bit of may which I will probably replace with high-quality balsamic vinegar
  • 100 calorie granola bars
  • Muffins from Cooking with Oprah cookbook (I'll share recipe soon)
  • poached egg on toast
  • egg white omelet
  • salmon
  • eating dinner with 1/3 meat/pasta/whatever and 2/3 or more veggies
  • pasta heaped with veggies (shrimp would do, too)
  • steak now and then

All that said, I'm sure I'm putting on about 5 lbs during this 2 week vacation we're taking - but at least I'm still exercising on a treadmill daily - and I'm off to the treadmill now...

All that sounds yummy, Paula! I never thought of preparing tuna like that. :clap:I must try this.

I  frozen raspberries and blueberries added to stuff like cereal or yogurt, low fat muffins, pancake syrup, frozen yogurt, etc., etc. Ooh I just thought I bet they'd (the raspberries)would even be good crumbled on a salad. I love putting oranges and grapefruits in salad too, and nuts or sunflower seeds too.
