Problem with computer resolution

:idontno: Wondering if anyone might have a suggestion as to what might be causing one of our networked computers at work to have what I consider ghostly pictures or xray type pictures on the msn homepage. All the background color is way off. The woman working on the computer is here one day a week and is in her 60's and was messing with all sorts of settings on the thing, which probably added to things even more.

She is getting a msn error message of Line 2, Charac: 35249 Error 887600de Code:0! Has anyone seen this before??? Any clues as to what might be going on is appreciated! Her picture images on the monitor looked fine yesterday and early this morning. I've tried resolution adjustments, auto adjustments and resetting them back to factory reset and nothing fixes it.

Sorry Lady D. Computers have a mind of their own sometimes and can be so frustrating.

Re: Problem computer resolution

It is when you have someone mostly computer illiterate and they sit playing with all the adjustments as to brightness and contrast, so forth and so forth. And now the entire internet page is a total mess, just not the picture images. I even went so far as to unplugging the monitor from the computer and hooking back up and it still didn't work. And of course, the computer had to recognize it as a new object so I may look and see if that can be uninstalled somehow. This monitor had been on someone else's computer and we got new monitors and put this one in her office. We tried it out yesterday afternoon and it worked fine, no problems. Not anymore! Maybe I can mess with it more tomorrow and try some other things.

I don't think it was the person changing the settings at all. It is an Intenet Explorer thing, but it is repaired in recent versions. Update your software . Go to update.microsoft.com and click "express install." Install all the updates and then reboot and you should see images correctly.

If you were using Mozilla Firefox for your browser, you wouldn't have that problem. You can click above to take you to the site where you can download it for free. It is much better than IE. Try using it for a week or two, and if you don't like it, just continue to use IE again. I still keep IE on my desktop, but I only have one occasion when I have needed to use it.

 Thanks SJ, I will give that a try tomorrow. Appreciate it. This woman ignores all the updates and never does them so I guess it caught up with her.

SJ, just want to take this opportunity to get up on my soapbox and say that you and John R both convinced me to use Mozilla several months ago, but IE still got some occasional use. A few weeks ago, IE started blocking a lot of sites, treating things like popups that weren't, and even adjusting the security settings didn't work. After this happened, we got some sort of worm/virus/nasty thing that attached itself to all the bookmarks saved via IE, and we kept getting popups redirecting us to some site (in Italian) trying to open up porn sites. Took forever to finally rid our computer of that--now I'm almost afraid of IE!

...and you should be. I take it that you are now using FireFox and are sailing smoothly?

The monitor is a NEC Multisync LCD1770V, our work operating system is Windows 98. Dinosaur. Our tech guy needs to upgrade us to XP. The problems are worse on there this morning. Went to microsoft to check for updates and there are none. Just minor updates available for Windows 98 as they quit having major updates as of July 11th for Windows 98. Upon logging on got an error message stating cannot find device file needed to run windows or windows applications. Something about system.ini and the windows registry. Got a WOL558xd code also. Emailed this to our tech guy, haven't heard anything from him though. Her internet won't come up. Supposedly the MSN was messed up from when she logged on yesterday morning. He will have to fix that now. I cannot do anything with the registry here at work and missing files. Would get my fanny in trouble. Was thinking it might be something simple. All of her text yesterday was just huge, like way off the screen.

You know it! I've even trained the L'il Pods to not use IE anymore. That leaves one stubborn holdout... :bang:

The monitor issue first. Have you downloaded the proper drivers for NEC Multisync LCD1770V. if not go to
http://www.necdisplay.com/support/m...edinf/files2.htm&title=Display Device Drivers

Then to the drop down for NEC LCD Desktop Displays
and select your monintor and download the drivers. once you download the drivers double click the file to unzip.

Just wondering how much of this I should try to do as we do pay a tech guy to fix our problems, but unfortunately, he is in McLean, VA and was not available at all today. He would have my head on a platter if I messed things up. And my computer went down this afternoon, was down for over two hours. Still not working when I left work. I would imagine that is the problem with the one monitor we tried to hook up on the computer across from me also. The picture was not right, nor the print. Very faint. He is supposed to get with us in the a.m. but we will see. I hate computer problems.

Im with you on that. Im a computer engineer for a large lawfirm and we ask that our users dont get involved with issues like this. But on the other hand we are 24/7 support so there is always someone to fix the issue in a reasonable amount of time. Sound to me like it is a driver issue. Windows 98 was a great operating system in its time but it was never suited for office use. It was more a home operating system. Windows XP comes with more drivers for the newer stuff and has plenty for the old stuff too. If now you can ususlly find them on the internet. If you did decide to download the drivers I sent you it would not effect the well being on the computer. Drivers are only there if you need them. If they are not needed they will just sit untile they are needed if ever. If you do have any questions you are more than welcome to PM me. If I can aswer them I will. If not I know lots of folks in IT that might be able to. Good luck.

JT, I finally got on with our tech guy late this afternoon. Got my problem fixed pretty quickly. A video card problem. Had a missing file on the other computer. Went to my computer and copied it and took the floppy and installed it on the other computer. It also was missing a driver of some sort and he determined what was missing as to certain things he had me read to him in the settings. I got that downloaded and installed with his instruction and now that one is ok. Still have one more to do Monday. It will not be as complicated as the other but it too has a bad image problem, plus some freezing up problems. I will remember your suggestions though in case I ever have need of them as I am sure sometime something else will come up. Thanks.
