When I was in basic training in the San Francisco area in the late 60's I received a one day pass to go into town. Near the Haight-Ashbury district I observed a crowd surrounding a long haired bearded man in a robe standing atop some steps at a street corner. He was talking to God on a loose handset cut from a telephone. He didn't sound any less insane than Sarah Palin. The video below is from the Iowa Freedom Summit.
