Walking in Memphis

Hi everyone:
Alifunn pm'ed me to prompt me to check in--I know I've been quiet. We're now established here in Memphis--and we simply love the city. My job is a big one--and I've got increasing responsibilities that sometimes keep me awake (hence this late night posting!) Probably one of the big reasons we love our neighborhood so much is that it reminds us of Seaside--and the neighbors here have been wonderful and friendly. Husband is working out of our house--(telecommuting to his old NY job)--that too is going well. We like it here a great deal, but I'm working really hard.

But the hardest thing I did this summer was to take daughter (my younger child)off to college in upstate NY. I cannot believe how much I miss her--empty nesting feels like I've suddenly grown very old, and tho husband and I are enjoying each other's company and the wonderful cultural life of Memphis--its really hard not to miss our kids.

We missed our vacation at SOWAL this summer--we'll definitely go next year, and maybe even sneak in a trip in the winter (I followed postings last year re the conditions down there--we might try it.)

Thanks for caring--this is quite a community on this forum.

Congratulations on the move and the job and surviving the empty nest, Newyorker. You have a lot on your plate. I hope you two are able to get down to SoWal this winter.

Glad things are well. The weathers becoming quite nice here in TN....and I can imagine how pretty the campus is in the fall.

Hang in there with the last child leaving. It does take some adjustment. My youngest child left last year, and it took until Feb. for me to overcome the funk I was in. Time does make it easier. Children are a gift from above, and we are quite lucky to enjoy ours.

A trip to sowal for a weekend sounds just like the right thing to do! No place like it for me to recharge and relax.

Hey newyorker. :welcome: to Memphis! Where abouts in Memphis are you residing??? Hope you will find the time to visit Beale Street and the Blues clubs if you are into that and Peabody Place. Nice smaller mall and restaurants down there. Winters won't be as bad here. It does get cold, but nothing like New York. And I hope you won't miss the snow, as we usually only get one snow a winter if lucky, I myself long for a good snow here, we never get it. Last year we had none until February. The winter before we had two early if I remember correctly, in December, one that unbelievably stayed on the ground the entire week of Christmas. Alot of sleet and ice was in that one! And we usually get nothing in December. Don't know whether you have had time to check out the malls but the best mall area is the Wolfchase Mall off of I-40. They have built the new Avenue Carriage Crossing mall that runs off of Hwy 385, or Bill Morris Pkwy also, which from what I've heard is nice! And we are a lot closer to Sowal than New York is. Hope you enjoy it here!

Work, even though demending, can be a wonderful challenge if you enjoy it!
Enjoy your first "warm" winter.
I not even imagine how hard it must be to become empty nesters....:(

Hope you get to SoWal soon!

Welcome back. Hope you are enjoying Memphis. Sorry about your empty nest. I am going through that as well. My son is in Memphis with you. If you feel the need to mother someone he's available. I went to church with him on my last visit there and found he has several 2nd moms there. But feel free to jump in if you need a "mom fix". I really enjoyed myself in Memphis, we had a nice time seeing all the sights. Keep posting, this board will get you through most anything.

I'll be in Memphis mid-October on business - will have to check out the new mall while I'm down there. Hope they're open evenings! :)

That mall is very nice. They are open evenings, not all night like Walmart, but regular mall hours. Enjoy!

thanks all. Have done some mall-crawling (I live virtually on the river, so the malls are a bit of a drive east--and thanks for the suggestion re another mall)--but the cultural life here is great, and yes, we've been to Beale Street a number of times. One thing I want to hype--the zoo. I had a tour today (doing development work w. my President...a long story)--but the zoo here is fabulous. Take your kids if you are in the area--I think Mr. NewYorker and I will have a "zoo date" when we can carve out some time. The students from my college evidently are regular attendees (the zoo is across the street from my college)

As for the empty nest--my son is already at college, so I thought that dropping off number 2 would not be as hard. I was wrong--it really was painful. To top things off--she got cut from the college field hockey team (it had been a dream of hers to play college field hockey)--the night she called crying is when it hit me about how far away she really was. A positive thing tho--her first-year seminar is "Katrina and the Politics of disaster" (which she loves)--and her college is flying the whole class down to NO on their fall break. My husband and I will drive down there and have a chance to see her--so I'm comforted by that. (we have a place to stay--but resturant recommendations are welcome--where would y'all take your college student in NO these days??)

Oak Court Mall is another mall around the Poplar and Perkins area. Won't have to totally go out to the Wolfchase or Collierville area. I haven't been to the zoo since my son was around 7 years old. He is 24 now! But I am a person who doesn't go much. I only go out if I necessarily have to. I am a homebody in the evening!

Hi! I pm'd you yesterday regarding some of my favorite spots in Memphis. For NO--We love Bayona, and usually stay at the Dauphine Orleans just across the street. Stella is great-and our trip is never complete without a trip to Irene's ---have fun!

I think you are doing beautifully, newyorker, with all the changes that are happening in your life. I'm glad you wrote so frankly about your children going off to college--our son is the same age as yours and our daughter is one year behind. When I was at the library yesterday picking up books about choosing and paying for colleges (dearest daughter has started making noises at this late date about maybe :!: wanting more than than State U), I also picked up one about how to cope with the empty nest syndrome. I figured I may as well be prepared for all scenarios! So thank you for saying it like it is.
