I was messing around with Google Earth and stumbled on this. I've not noticed it before. Anyone have an idea what the clearing is. Sure looks precise and "Greek-ish". Oh yea...and BIG.
Reminds me a little of the corn field mazes but with sand.

This is very strange and there is no bridge over the creek coming off the bay. I must go exploring! Kurt, do you know what that creek is?

Are you talking about the intercoastal waterway?

Check out http://earth.google.com if you haven't already. It's definitely a time robber. Very cool to "push-pin" (save) your favorite locations and then start an automatic flyover from one location to the next. You can even get a 3D perspective (go to the Grand Canyon and tilt the view angle and then spin the image - very cool). They actually store 3D coordinates on major geographic features (hills, mountains, canyons). Go to NY city and turn on the 3D building option. Amazing - the amount of data that is registered to the image.
Are you talking about the intercoastal waterway?
Yep. I thought I'd call it the "big ditch" because some of the boating locals seem to. I'm just trying to blend in. 😀
By the way, it appears that Google updated their images recently. If you're zoomed out a little, the clearing I'm referring to, disappears. If you zoom in, you then see the clearing. Gauging on gulf front features, it appears these newer images are from after Ivan by a few months (early 2005).

There is a sign on that road for utility or public works, I can't remember it's been a long time since I've been over there.
Someone told me tonight that they checked out their house on google earth and actually saw themselves standing in the yard.

The more I look at it, the more I think it's the foundation for the huge CHARLIE HILTON MAUSOLEUM to go along with the huge beach front home.
Nope, never mind, it doesn't have any curves. 😀

i'm surprised you haven't found this sooner, since it is the place where the composite for your seawall was mined from. local sources always make for cheaper pricing. and new technology was developed specifically for composite sewall material to mine in straight lines...;-)
hope to see you at mountainfilm.
who's up for a field trip to go check this thing out?

if something is refered to as devil's swamp I would imagine it may be best to let it alone. Unless of course you are up for the adventure. Havent you heard the story of Tate's Hell Swamp? That man returned crazed and dazed for sure. Be sure to bring a sidearm........... the rattlesnakes have been crawling lately.

Thanks, I finally found my excuse! 😀
What about all those excursions that supposely took place this weekend?
John R, did you find that composite mine?😀
Bobby J and Beachbummett, what about you guys?
I've estimated this UFO clearing is about 3/4 of a mile long. Big landing field. Maybe the new airport surveyors screwed up. 😀

I had to go check this out on GoogleEarth (love that site).
Very interesting.
At first I couldn't tell if those lines were trenches or mounds, but if you look at the shadows, (compared to the trees) they are definitely mounded up.
We need to send a SoWal recon. force up there to check it out.

That does look interesting. The property was purchased by Walton County
in Dec 2002. The soil type is listed as sand, so I would guess that sand is being mined. It appears as though the lines within the boundaries are dikes. I can see what appears to be pipes or pumps, connecting one side of a dike to the other. The surrounding property is owned by the NW FL Water Mgt.

Probably a borrow site (mine). Maybe the signs I saw at the turnoff were County Public Works signs.

It is a burrow site. I never went up once my wife told me she heard about it. The lines were so straight it looked odd. Anyway, once my wife filled me in I backed out because as many of you know our wives know everything!:clap_1:

Just for the rest of us (including me), what is a borrow site? I can take an educated guess but I'd probably be wrong! Those in the know, please share. Thanks!

Sand pit, mine, borrow pit - where they dig and ship dirt, clay, sand.
