I think it is wonderful what Madonna has done. She is clearly not doing it for publicity. what are your thoughts?

Adoption is a wonderful thing, but--if it is true that the father misunderstood the process and never intended for Madonna to adopt his son--it's a sad story.

Madonna was on Oprah yesterday and apparently she blames the media for the hype that has been started

Nothing like a little 3rd world country baby adoption, followed by controversy (gee what a surprise) followed by an appearance on Oprah to thrust oneself back in the spotlight.

What has Madge done that has NOT been about generating publicity?:idontno: That is how she makes money- she is not a dim bulb.

I too saw her on Oprah yesterday and I think her heart is in the right place. Besides, who would adopt a child for publicity? If she wants publicity all she has to do is go outside.

very true joho.

I do hope the child joins madonnas family and has a wonderful life!!!

madonna's accomplished much, and done a lot her life, but lying or doing anything mean isn't her thing. especially when it concerns a child.

I don't know much about Madonna's adoption or reasons, and frankly don't care, but I have to agree that someone couldn't possibly be looking for publicity especially if they have their opwn biological children
. Although it may be easier for celebrities, international adoption is a long arduous process in most countries. It's a very emotional process. People tell parents who adopt, oh, at least you don't have to have labor. Believe me, I know people who have adopted, and the process was one big labor pain of love.

You would think that in these countries where children are starving and dying of diseases that the adoption policies would be more lenient, but unfortunately, that's just not the case.

i've often wondered how these celebrities choose the child to adopt. if i went to a village and saw all the children in extreme poverty, etc. i think it would be extremely difficult to choose just one child to "save". i haven't really kept up on this story because to be honest i could care less what madonna does. i do think publicity plays a major part - doesn't she have a tour going around now ?

I am of two minds about it.

On one hand: It's Madonna, aging a bit, trying to keep the stardom thing going when she's not straddling crucifixes or whatever.Angelina Jolie has her little tykes, and now here's Madonna doing her own 3rd world babyshopping. I am sure her celebrity oiled the adoption wheels along. And perhaps the biological father did not want the adoption to take place? Hmmm.

On the other hand: How on earth did the child get adopted if the father did not in <some> way relinquish him to the facility? In addition to top healthcare and education, the kid will have a lot of material advantages. The love he receives might be from a mom who is a bit distracted, but I don't doubt she genuinely cares for her offspring.

I guess basically I am a bit cynical too yet think more good than bad comes from it.

Agreed, and she may have been completely upfront with her intentions to adopt this child; what she had in mind was most certainly completely clear to her. My concern is that the father might not have had an equally clear understanding of her intentions, and--if there is any truth to this--my heart goes out to him.

Well, the adoption isn't final yet, from what I understand. Typically, a family adopting a child in Malawi must reside there for 18 months before it becomes final. Madonna and her family were able to arrange their 18-month trial period (or whatever the real term is) to take place in London, in their home, with visits from a social worker. In terms of the father, it has been reported that he was under the impression that she would take the child with her, raise him and give him the advantages of life with that family, but he would still be legally his son. Cil, I know you can read about it on CNN.com and NPR.org.

Madonna told her side of the story on Oprah yesterday in which she stated the following:

She had been visiting the African country working with the people (goodwill) in which the small boy named David caught her eye.
She found out he was abandoned at two weeks his mother died of aids and his father left him with the adoption home.
After helping him recover from pneumonia and running aids tests on the boy (negitive) she fell in love and developed a bond with him.
She went through all the proper paper work and even spoke and met the father. She said he knew exactly what her intentions were when he agreed that his son would have died without her help.
After this news hit the papers and the reporters began to haunt the father and manipute him he began this "I didn't realize she was adopting my son". :idontno:
She said "It's a shame that this incident will probably deter people from adopting in other countries".................

The same thing happens every day in this country in a sense; a pregnant woman decides she wants to give her unborn baby up for adoption. She possibly meets the prospective birth parents, sees they can give her baby much more than she can, signs the paperwork, etc. Then the moment of surrendering the baby comes, and she can't go through with it. In most cases, she doesn't have to.
What deters people from adopting in other countries is that the red tape and expense makes it difficult; I don't think the issues surrounding her situation will deter people. There's also the option she didn't take--adopting a needy African-American child in her own country, but I digress.

this is so true mango my dear. and its one of the reasons that I could never buy into madonna's adoption as being some publicity stunt. adoption is serious and its difficult, and its for life.

I've heard she's adopting a 46 yr old Chinese woman to raise the kid.

With her kind of money, she could adopt some parents for the kid.:funn:

BTW, I don't think Madonna is adapting the kid for the press either ( I didn't even see the press). I think she just wants to be like Angelina Jolee, or whoever it is that likes to adopt kids.
