911 for help???!?

I'm so mad right now, I hope this makes some sense. Another sowaller that we all care very much for just called me from the side of the road after having a minor accident. She was fine, however, her car was not. She was very uneasy with the area she was in, but needed to call a towing service, so we hung up and I waited for her call back. After about 20 min. of nothing, I got really worried and called 911. Now, in my mind, I guess I was thinking that they had contact info. to get someone to check on her....what an imaginary world I am living in...in my own head!!!

The response I got was more like this...911, after seeing that there was not a Walton Co. injury tranferred me to the S. O. I explained the situation to this guy and the response was..."well, I don't know anyone in that area, if she is hurt she needs to call 911".... am I missing something here??? all I can think about is that family that was found dead on the side of the road... and 911 tells me they can't help me???? I certainly do not want to "Bash" the S.O., but...is that the way things work???

A ps on this is that she is now "fine"...I finally talked to her and kept talking until help got there. But what if we never got a call through??:idontno:

Glad the SoWaler is alright.
I am not sure how 911 works in Walton County, but even though I am only an hour North of NYC, we didn't have 911 until about 8 years ago. My understanding is it a separate entity from the police department, and they arrange for ambulatory services if someone is injured or having a medical emergency. :idontno: or call the police or fire municipality if necessary.

Thanks Beachmom for talking to me through my little ordeal.

I can beat the Walton County disinterest. As I'm waiting on the AAA truck for two and a half hours, the police pull up to let me know I'm in a bad neighborhood and need to leave. I point out the radiator juices in a puddle under my car, and they say, "Just wanted to let you know, we gotta call to go to a shooting down the road. Bye."

Gee, thanks.

Sorry to hear about your scary ordeal, Rapunzel. Just interested to know, though, what neighborhood were you in ... there was a shooting down the road? I want to know so I can make sure to stay away!

No where near SoWal! I was on I-10 travelling west when this happened, and it was just the nearest exit. That is my favorite thing about SoWal...rarely does anyone get shot.

Beachmom...this concerns me greatly...was your friend in Walton County when this happened? If so, you need to find out who the dispatcher's supervisor is.

If not, and perhaps this is what you are asking...Walton County 911 only handles Walton County emergencies. And, not to speak on behalf of the S.O., but as far as I know, the primary method of communication between different counties / different states is NCIC, and even then, it's reserved for "be on the lookout" calls. Dispatch probably does have the correct numbers for calling Bay, Okaloosa, Holmes, etc handy but beyond that, they would need to call information.

I'm very glad she is OK!

That makes sense. It seems like there could be a potential for problems when calling 911 from cell phones, too. Do they revert to 911 for their home calling area, or do they roam into the local emergency area?

She was not in Walton Co. I just didn't know what else to do. I guess I just thought they would be a little more help, even directing me to who else to call. I was very surprised with the attitude that I got. Maybe nothing to them, but to someone who has never called 911, it was a big deal to me. I was just worried about a friend.

That works in Florida (Florida Hwy Patrol), but is there a universal number to get the state patrol in whatever state you are in?

When calling 911 from cell phones they pick up the local 911 center, not the center your phone is based in.

I'd have an issue with the attitude too. Unfortunately, human relation skills are getting increasingly hard to come by, in all professions.

Oh yeah especially with mine, as in today. Let me explain...

So you all know I am doing some PART TIME work with this firm in Atlanta writing environmental documents for them--NEPA process papers. Well anyways, today is like my third day, I work one day a week when I can fit it in. I went into work at 6:30am and left at 2:00 so that I could go take some photos of a wetland area. Well while I am in the field I get a call from the big guy--the one whose name appears in the firm's name--wanting to know where I am and what I am doing. So, I tell him and thirty minutes later I get a call from HR wanting to know why I came in at 6:30am and leave at 3:30 pm the two Saturdays before and then today why did I leave so early...well I explain and they tell me, "well for future reference if you are going to come in that early you need to stay until 5 or 5:30pm." What and work over 9 hours a day even though I finish my work before I leave at 3:30pm? Well the tone of voice from everyone I spoke with was just totally rude and I am set off easily, so someone is going to have an unpleasant day in two weeks when I return. I may just tell them all to kiss my A$$ that I am here to help and I have my own agendas and if they think differently, then I will just expose the corruption which I uncovered my second day there.

Okay, back on course, Rapunzl I am glad that you are okay.
