Much to the amusement of my spouse and daughter, I am feng shui-ing our house. They think I've gone off some new age rocker and they're guffawing left and right. They can hardly contain themselves.

However, the clutter is disappearing slowly but surely, and things look nicer (thought the unbelievers can't say why) and I am calmer. So it can't be that bad.

So please tell me I'm not the only SoWaller out there who has looked into this! Or am I?

I agree that feng shui is helpful for calming. It makes sense that decluttering would de-stress (and I'm going to follow your lead...). the different textures of feng shui also make sense in terms of "balancing".

I also like the concept of wabi sabi, though it's hard to describe. Partly it means appreciating the beauty of slight imperfection and understatement. Just heard about wabi sabi recently and I really like it.

No, but I am a follower of the Funk Way, a similar and equally ethno-centric philosophy.

If it works the way it's supposed to, sure! So far I've only done the bathroom; today's the bedroom and then I work my way down the hall. The hard part is de-cluttering. I"m a bit of a slob.

Oh, Cool. You can not be any more of a slob than me.....I am trying to de-clutter a little everynight. Maybe in a few years I will be done.

I firmly believe in feng shui. I use it in my office frequently and how it is decorated. Certain colors and elements are required. I found out that I need metals around, so I have frames with silver etc. My house has a Southern exposure. I also do not keep a lot of clutter around. I can't function. It can get really complex, but I know that at the very least
de-cluttering is a grayt start. :clap_1:

I also practice 30Gays Funk Way!

I am a big believer in feng shui. I just need a housekeeper to help me get there. There are many basic principles with feng shui that many people may know, without knowing they are feng shui. eg- not having a dining room with opens directly into the bathroom toilet, for all to see and hear. ;-)

Isn't the de-cluttering part a bit difficult this time of the year??:idontno:

No it's not, because you have to move stuff around anyway to make way for Christmas decorations. It's a good time to say "Let's move this...out...permanently!" And there, you've de-cluttered.

Jdarg, google "feng shui bathroom" and see all the info you come up with. In my bathroom, there was too much fire (red) so I switched out the rug that was on the wood floor for a calmer green one with a softer pattern. I also switched some pictures around and added one mirror and a plant. Now it looks nicer and it's also feng-shui-ier.

Mermy, I have been decluttering my house for two weeks!!! I didn't think of feng shui, but in a way it is, I guess. I'm talking about organizing, getting rid of, simplifying, and making more functional, every room and closet in the house. I just have to do it before I can even think of bringing in a tree or decor. I had just emailed Mango a few days ago to tell her about my madness.

Good luck, and give us some good tips...

NO! I must do it before I can bring in the first piece of christmas decoration. don't ask me why, but even my closet (upstairs, way away from the living area) has to be in top shape before I can relax for Christmas (I've still got some work to do on that closet)...

That's so me! But that's why I feel so calm at the beach house -- the colors are calm, and there's no clutter (except for the garage which is my husband's realm over which I have no control). Our house in GA has too much stuff in it -- it makes me nervous.

I hear that there are people you can hire to de-clutter, but they don't exist where we live. I am hiring a color expert in town to help me re-visit our color scheme. I'm sure she knows about feng shui because she used to work for a major textile company as a designer -- actually, she did the colors for our beach house.

Tootsie, go to the library and get some books out. It's 133.3 in the stacks. You might go through a few of them because some are kind of weird or too complicated, but others are really practical. It's trial and error, I found.

Merman and Fyl understand the part about decluttering. When I say "no unsorted socks in baskets at the foot of the bed" they get it, but when I start mentioning the freeing energy of the phoenix needing to be let loose, they collapse into giggles. Both of them.

I'm sorry, but I am giggling too. J-funn said that you are going to come feng shui me!!!! :floor: I don't know if I want to be fend shui'ed. If I find out that all of my problems for the past 42 years could have been solved by adding a mirror and turning loose a phoenix,, I'm gonna be really pissed. So let's just keep me dumb and blissfully ignorant.

I totally understand. My own daughter--my own flesh and blood!--has banned me from touching anything in her bedroom. I told her when she goes off to college next fall, the room is fair game.

Well, Merm, you've gone and done it. Now I'm planning to go through the house room by room over the next month to declutter it. Our biggest clutter problems are dinnerware (I love plates and have inherited some nice stuff that I like to use, so we have many sets of dishes/glasses), games, books, clothes, craft stuff (kids love to do crafts in the basement), and photos (I have tons of photos -- the kids' lives have been very well documented).

I'm going to start a garage sale pile for the spring.

Anyway, thanks for the motivation. Can you get me to exercise (you've tried and failed before)? Maybe if we find a nice Japanese term for exercise?
