A number of my friends, including some on this board, have been tossing around the idea of taking a trip somewhere this Christmas.
It seems like it could be a fun time to get away, as work schedules slow down and if we plan it correctly- prices are lower.
Originally, our thoughts were something with mountains and snow -The Italian Alps, Germany, Austria, Banff or Vancouver etc.
A city trip might be fun- Paris, Quebec, Rome.
I have traveled for Xmas once, to southern Italy, it was great fun, but I would love to hear about other peoples experiences with trips at this time of year.
Anyone been to Paris in December? How is it? Too cold? etc.......
Any thoughts about more exotic locations like Morocco?

Oh brilliant idea! He says sarcastically????.
Can you imagine me as your tour guide to Paris? Oh yes, you?d all love it at first, the hilarity and smart ass comments would keep you all well entertained?..at first.
And then it would turn ugly.
Oh I can see it now, the gay man leading the poor wretched rabble of heteros on a Tour de France.
And then the revolt would begin, the second French Revolution. ?No more haut-couture boutiques!...No more cabaret!?, the fetid masses of straights would scream as they set up a barricade, Les Miserables style, in the hotel corridor to keep 30-gAy from leading them on yet another tour of pastry shops.
Marie Antoinette lost her head in just such an affair; I however, have too much self preservation instinct to fall into this trap.
And so I will stay safely here in south Walton. To the poor masses of heterosexuals, I say?
?Let them eat Crabcake!?
I promise never to complain about y our pastry tour.

Man...y'all have HORRIBLE timing.
Don't say you weren't warned though.
The planets align pretty much once a year.
And you're all going to miss it.:nono1:

Here's an apartment I found that can be rented by the week:
$300 per day and sleeps 6 ($50 per person)
Close to the Louvre.

Have seen it MANY times
and will still see it all in December (just a little faster) . I agree about the train tour Ali. Paris is wonderful but it would be a shame to miss Amsterdam, Rome, Venice etc. I've spent a week at a time and it's just a slower paced trip. We can arrange to spend a little more time in Paris by cutting out Austria and Switzerland but it's your deal baby and if you want the whirlwind package, I'm with you and you will see it all! Don't forget to buy a journal for times on trains.
$850 Airfare
I'll pick up all my backpacks (I think I've got 4) just in case we sway Uncle Tim to our side
Not trying to influence anybody's decision but here's what we'll see

PLUS PARIS!

Cork, you're slaying me with those pictures! The only thing that keeps me from being pea green with envy is that we're doing a family trip to SoWal at Christmas...otherwise I'd be begging to tag along.

Great pictures! Love the one of Salzburg in the snow.
I have been doing the whirlwind tours of Europe the past few years, so this time I am definitely staying put in one place long enough that I feel like I have seen it all.
So for me, it will be a week (8-9 days) in Paris with possible day trips to Versailles, Fontainebleu, and Chartres. Plus there are enough museums in Paris to keep me busy for a whole week.
But don't let this stop you and Alli from making your own plans to visit the places that you want, we can all hang out the time you are in Paris and then I can wave you off at the train station....like in the old movies. ( I will even run along side as the train pulls away, throwing kisses.........)
Allifunn -I'm counting on you to research food/restaurants. You can be our guide to French cuisine.

I have to agree with your Uncle Timmy. It's really nice to get the feel of a place, hang with locals, and really take the culture in.
Cork, my sister lived in Holland for 7 years, so those pics of the canals and the red light district bring back funny memories! Now I want to dig out all my old pictures!
I have to say that a trip to Holland and England together in March and April are the best. There is nothing like flying in and seeing miles of color from flower bulbs. My mother lived in England for a while too, and there are so many cool things to do there too. if I had a choice I would do England first, then hop on a hr. flight to Amsterdam.
Of course in the Spring.
separate trip.

I agree with you about the springtime trip idea. The tulips in Holland, and the daffodils in England.
Uncle Timmy
Have you ever been to Fontainebleau? I really liked it, especially the ride out there. We went one March and had the place to ourselves.
I only paid $528RT to get to Toulouse from Panama City, but that was last February. I hope you guys can do better than $850, but from what I am seeing, you might have to travel to a major city in order to do that, which can be a hassle in itself. Good luck.

UT...It will be great to spend some time with you and your group, and Chickpea, in Paris!! But I have never traveled in Europe and I want the whole experience...I don't want a total whirlwind...Cork, I will let you know which cities are on my "must" list!
UT...that apartment looks wonderful! NEXT time...I am in for the whole time...how about a villa in Italy?
Research resturants...I love this job!

Oncle Timmy,
Sounds like there may be a number of SoWal people who are up for Christmas in Paris. I am SO looking foward to it. I've started the novel you gave me, and I'm practicing my francais daily. We'll just have to work on our tres chic wardrobes, and we'll be ready.

Cil,
I have been to France as a kid with my parents and we went to Fontainebleau, Versailles, the Louvre etc. but that was so many years ago. I am looking forward to seeing all of these great sites again as an adult.
If you have any tips to pass along, let me know.
Any suggestions on places to visit that are out of the way (not in the guide books) would also be welcome.

1) you can never get enough of paris. ever...
2) french cuisine - while it is absolutely divine, I found it to be very hit or miss as far as finding the right little restaurants, bistros... (the more expensive restaurants were worth it). but Paris has food from all over the world - we loved this one japanese restaurant...
