I like Charlie. I don't think he's a tool because he does tend to go his own way. He does seem to have a strong moral compass, one of the things that makes him likable.
I think the problem with him is that he is reactive, not proactive. This made him a good and popular AG because he would hear about problems and work hard on behalf of the citizens to get them resolved.
His decision to extend the early voting hours was a perfect Charlie move -- he saw a problem, he fixed it, he gained popularity by doing the right thing and not the political thing. But in doing so he gained political points.
However: He seems to utterly lack vision and can't seem to effectively deal with complex problems. If he has advisors around him who can, I don't know about it. Alex Sink right now seems to be the only one up there grounded in reality. She will give him a run for his money in two years. He would be better in the Senate, methinks.
