I just talked to my mom again. Here's what the over-zealous young cop took as an "assault" against him:
My mom and dad were trying to explain to the cop what happened with Wesley, and since the band was playing quite loudly, my dad had to lean close and raise his voice so the guy could hear him. Evidently, that counts as a threat against an officer.

It seems that if you have a case, you should go for it, and contest it. If he doesn't have a prior record it may be dismissed. If the deputies were out of line, brutality is not acceptable! If they get away with it, they'll do it again.

That's part of the problem. My dad and my brother both have prior records. They both have a handful of minor traffic altercations, Dad has two DUIs, and Wes has a drunk in public and an assault charge. (He's a bit of a misguided soul, but I love him to pieces, and he's really turned himself around.)
My mom thinks that my dad probably will have less of a chance to fight this since he has those DUI charges, but we're still at least hoping that the offending Officer gets some sort of punishment. At least then the $96 would be somewhat worth it.
