Illegal Immigration

Arizona has passed legislation making it a crime to be an illegal immigrant and requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is an illegal alien.

Hope they've got a lot of extra money in the budget for jails and lawsuits.:bang:

I've been on a rampage the last few days on more than one thread. More argumentative than usual. But all of a sudden it hit me. I think I am all argued out. Not for any reason. Just not feeling bothered about anything which is kinda nice. Thx for playing, people. Check in with you soon. G

"illegal immigrants - its a really bad way to desribe a huge segment of people who live here. they are at your mercy as to whether they are entitled to the rights given to everyone else alive on American soil."

Illegals Aliens are not entitled to any American rights. They had to sneak into our Country in the first place, knowlingly subverting our laws to better themselves, not our Country. Make no mistake about it illegals have taken jobs away from other Americans. The notion that Americans didn't want them is tainted. Americans want the job for the right wage. Illegals taking the jobs for less than minimum wage has prevented minimum wage laws from effectively working.

this is the way many see it.

too bad they don't realize that the situation is as it is because we made it as it is. not the person who came here risking everything in order to find a better life - illegally or otherwise. we opened our arms and gave them jobs with low pay. we looked the other way. we let them come but we didn't consider all the potential problems of allowing an illegal group to grow as huge as it has. we certainly were not concerned with their rights once they got here and apparently some people are just opening their eyes and are suddenly shocked and horrified by how these people entered our country illegally! as if it suddenly happened last year.

The numbers have been steadily increasing and recession budget issues/Mexico are making it more immediate, but there is no denying that the reason we have illegal immigrants is because there are Americans knowingly helping them, exploiting them, and profiting from them.

I got a good laugh by your suggestion that the illegals risked so much coming to the US. What a joke. They benefit all the way around. Better pay, free healthcare, most charitable nation in the World. The US is the only Country I'm aware of where people become full time beggars because it pays better than most jobs.

Americans expect the Federal Gov't to do their job and protect the borders. The Feds got lazy so we elect someone who will fix the problem. Amnesty can't be an option unless the border is absolutely secure. that will be many years from now.

I didn't hire these folks and I want them gone so Americans can get their jobs back. If I have to pay more for my services so be it, but I want American workers in America.

Then you might want to direct your anger and bitterness at the companies and businesses that hired them to work in the first place.;-) Maybe when lazy Americans get off their fat asses and break a sweat, we won't need an immigrant workforce. There are plenty of American citizens who have found it is much more profitable to be on the dole, and plenty of businesses who have found people willing to work for an honest day's wage.

glad you got a good laugh about people who have the kind of courage and desperation we will never know or face. A good laugh is what we all need now and then! Do you know immigrant families? I do. They are truly hard working and bring some incredibly rich culture and traditions - they have already bonded with communities over the years. they have worked hard for what little they have. now you are going to tell them to go home? why? is the economy just not good enough for you to allow them to stay, after all these years? are they really standing in the way of your dreams? I think not.

as far as I know, illegals have worked jobs that Americans have given them. period. Americans have hired who they hire - illegal or not. Americans also have no problem whatsoever with sending a huge percentage of jobs overseas. once again I repeat - these issue are of our own making, these are choices based entirely on profit. these are choices YOU have made. and I understand the frustrations of citizens at this point... its called consequences.

Well I wouldn't agree with this actually. Immigration reform has been a central issue for decades. Remember Reagan's Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986?

We've been trying to solve the problem for a long time. It's in the fore front today due to the risks in having a porous southern border. That's something we shoudl definitely address, for national security.

Yes,

I want them to go back to their Country not stay illegally in mine. I think it's great you have gotten close with illegals. A good friend would encourage them to do the right thing, not try and cover for them.

The fact is they broke our laws and should not be here. Once the border is secure they should be rounded up, if they don't voluntarily leave. There should be nothing pretty about it.

the soil the mexicans are migrating to was once mexico before we took it away. how fitting! all americans of european descent are illegals in that our forefathers came and took what rightfully belonged to native americans. this thread smells of intestinal gas.

of course its not a new problem or issue in america. and of course the border issues require attention. absolutely! my point was that folks are so enraged by "illegal immigrants" that it seems as if they think it is just now a big problem and that all these people came illegally and took their jobs. what I should have said is that many legal citizens have no idea about immigration - they just don't want anyone doing it unless its legal (if then). they just do not know the facts. they look at the whole thing as if its a black and white issue. it is far more complex than that.

An alternative is to relax the immigration laws, that is decriminalize that which is currently illegal. My approach is possible, your's is not, end of story.

Your solution appeases/encourages lawbreakers.

If the law is changed to make it legal it's no longer lawbreaking. Your approach will never work. Law enforcement would never cooperate on such an effort. It is an idealistic fairry tale pipe dream, for you that is. For the rest of us it's an Orwellian nighmare scenario. What you are suggesting amounts to a war on illegal immigration. It reminds me of the war on drugs, which we all know has been such a resounding success.:sarc:

But also sort of disgusting.

Rounding up a bunch of people who risked everything to live and work here like cattle and deporting them across the border, meh, they do that in Europe, but it's definitely not very American.

We should have a secure southern border and open immigration. We should have a very large and open guest worker program. We should be extending the welcome mat to these folks, and we should be passing legislation at the federal level that insures they aren't just coming here for a free ride. Policies like that are what made this country so great.

very interesting idea.

I wonder if people like yourself have considered any of the impact on themselves if we sent the good hardworking "illegals" all packing today. I wonder if they really know a single thing about how illegal immigration has turned into today's problem (the fact that WE welcomed workers by giving them jobs and we have done so for a good long time).
What if we deport them all?

By Jeff Jacoby | March 18, 2007
Second of two parts
"NOT OFTEN do I disagree with your views, but on illegal aliens we are a world apart," writes V., one of many readers I heard from after suggesting last week that the best solution to our illegal immigration problem is to make more immigration legal. "My view, unlike yours, is to secure the borders by whatever means possible. Arrest, imprison, and heavily fine employers who hire illegals. Apprehend and deport illegals no matter how long it takes -- years, if necessary.
"The American people," V. concludes, "overwhelmingly want these illegals out of the country."
Actually, only about one American in four feels that way.

I like the last sentences best...
Immigration is good for America. So is respect for the law. Nothing forces us to choose between them. As long as there is work for them to do here, immigrants will keep crossing the border. We'd all be better off if we let them cross it legally.

yes, I do agree - we will all be better off if we let them become "legal" and work out ways to patrol borders, establish excellent immigration policy/law with enforcement (of employers as well as employees).

usually doing the right thing is also what's best for everyone. I happen to think that is the case here.

I am very anti illegal alien. They're cowards for not fixing their own Country for their kids. They have a better life here mooching off our generosity.

Perhaps we should change the law on the requirement to file a tax return 10 years after I've been violating it. I'm a good guy and I can talk up a good story about being needy. There's a bunch of laws we should selectively change so violators wont be punished.

How do you feel about foreigners who think our country sucks and would never think of wanting to become citizens of the United States? Are they men and women of courage, discipline, initiative, and strong character? It sounds like that's what you are implying.

"States have no power to pass immigration laws because it?s an attribute of foreign affairs. Just as states can?t have their own foreign policies or enter into treaties, they can?t have their own immigration laws either."

That's what the official legal folks say anyway -

That's exactly correct. One of the main purposes of the Federal government is to deal with foreign relations and international issues. Of course, the Constitution also pretty clearly leaves most other topics (education, regulation of non-interstate business and travel, etc..). to the States and that certainly hasn't kept the Feds from usurping those rights and powers.

It would be nice if we could depend on both the Feds and the State governments to actually tend to their own knitting and do their jobs for a change. We wouldn't end up with these kinds of hijinks going on.
