So, Obama's supposed to annouce his run for the candicacy tomorrow. There's lots of speculation as to whether or not he has enough experience (8 in state, 2 in national). I can understand that. I can kind of understand people being uncomfortable with a man who's father is Muslim, especially now a days (I don't agree, I'm just saying!).

But here's my limit.

"Could a Smoker Be President?" is what CNN was just running. They're talking about how Obama being a smoker could point to other idosyntric tendancies (I hope I spelled that correctly. WHERE'S MOLLY!?!?! I CAN"T SPELL!!) that have not surfaced yet.

Okay, seriously. I'm a smoker. I'm okay with admitting it! I'm addicted. But as far as I'm aware, that does not make me any less able to do certain things as others. I know that the world is taking a harsher turn on smoking (like the push to make any movie that shows smoking R rated) but SERIOUSLY? The man's supposedly less able to be president because of smoking?!?! He's trying to quit. That's a whole lot more than I can say. Doesn't that make him a little more human?

I swear, these political analysts act like they've never done anything crazy.

Hillary is the favorite candidate of the extreme right. That is they hate to waste the smear campaign against her these past sixteen years. Her main crime? It appears that being an intelligent, well-educated female is her main crime. Oh yeah, and being a forgiving spouse. I am sure that if the dirt mongering far right media were to scour through most of our lives we would look much worst than Hillary ever thought about. Who was it that said something about ?casting the first stone??
I do not see her as a viable candidate, but I am sick of the rightwing smear. It is getting old.
NMP. I've never liked her. Just a personal preference.

I don't have consistient political views. I just hope Clooney and Diddy don't vote for her, because I ususally follow their lead.;-)

While I hear you on the $$$ running the country, it does directly affect the population when the President has the authority to appoint Supreme Court Justices. ;-)

I'm not voting for him, but Rudi Giuliani is center enough with his social issues, and still favorable in the public eye regarding his reactions following 911, that he may very well be the next President. -- That is, if the Republicans will vote for him. Many people in the GOP think Rudi is much too liberal. I wonder how he would have handled the Katrina craziness if he had been mayor of NOLA at the time.

Regarding Obama's legal drug addiction, I have no comment, as I too am a drug addict. Take away my caffeine and who knows what I might do. While I don't like the idea of leaders setting bad examples for the followers, I think his smoking would be more of a problem if he were being appointed to the office of Surgeon General. My guess is that the press would be kind to Obama's regarding his smoking habit, chosing not to reveal it -- probably even more kind to him than they have been to Mrs Bush, whom I've yet to see smoking on the television. One need not look past the lips to tell if one has been a smoker for a while. Muscles around the mouth don't lie.

Great post SJ.

I read an entire article about Obama's smoking the other day. The issue is definitely being spun as well as anything can be spun. It seems this is his major vice (that we know of) and before the press starts showing unattractive photos of him lighting up, he's getting it out in the open. The story is wife wants him to quit so he can get healthy, but he's talked about how he's worried that he won't be able to with the stress of the campaign trail. He's tried Nicorette and he says it's helping but people are telling him to get behavior modification therapy also. I think the story said he smokes about a pack a day.

There is no judgment from me on any of it, but it is interesting the way it is being handled. Either Obama, his wife or his campaign manager (or all three) is a genius. By acknowledging his addiction right away and his struggle to overcome it, it makes him relatable. But this would not work with most addictions. (Other than coffee. :D ) The only real problem with the addiction is that he could be hurting himself or his family. It doesn't affect the way he would run the country.

I like him a lot but he has not yet been subjected to the Full Monty of public scrutiny, nor have many of the other candidates. This time next year it may be a completely different game. I admit being terribly conflicted about Hillary ...

Interesting point about the spin, TFT. And I'm with you about Hillary.

Nothing there at all. A lot of generalities. Will he raise taxes on married couples who both have jobs? If the 2003 tax cuts expire my wife and I are going to be hit hard with a tax increase like a number of married couples I know. Is he going to raise the capital gains tax on Real Estate? These are issues important to my family, so where does he stand?????

But what about his policies? Doesn't that matter anymore? :idontno:

Well of course they matter. But let's face it - a candidate has to be likeable first if they want people to pay attention and take notice of what they have to say.

Exactly, nothing there at all. Same on any Hillary sponsored sites. She has no positions on anything either. Just taking it poll by poll.

It is too early to start nailing down the boards of a platform. We will have to endure at least a season of trial balloons first.

Well said, unfortunately. Why can't politicians have the guts to stand for something? Oh, yeah, I forgot -- they are career politicians. :bang:

Random thoughts about this great thread. Drunkkenartist, agreed but they voice their concern about terrorism in private only. Hillary, although she easily could be a competent President, may be the only candidate to completely rally the Repubs...ironic, no? Obama is, to me, more about style over substance much like New Beetle vs. Old Beetle. I believe once Obama is forced to take positions on controversial subjects, we will learn he is not centrist enough to be President. It was Hillary's centrist effort on Iraq that put her on the wrong side of the war vote. Her own ambition got in the way of her intellect. Had the Democrats reversed Edwards and Kerry, they would have won the last election. Edwards is the most telegenic of the three. He's also comes with the easiest instruction manual[white male, from the South]. Gulliani, Romney, Clinton are all from the Northeast. It's been about 50 years since anyone from that region has been elected....JFK.

I think Edwards has the most hope. Obama and Hillary will probably help put another Republican back in. I do like Obama but a little to early to determine if he is corrupt enough! ;-)

It's early days yet.

I share SJ's skepticism of career politicians.

As far as Obama's smoking/health issues, well, because of his disability, FDR couldn't *walk* all that well, and did indeed die in office, but did many good things before he passed away. I am much less concerned about Obama (or any other candidate) succombing to smoking than I am about him succombing to lobbying/big business.

January 20, 2009 can't come fast enough for me.

Can I just say I don't care for John Edwards? What a classic limo liberal-stirring class envy from the comfy digs of his 12000 square foot house...gonna 'fix' healthcare even though he and other cash greedy trial attorneys sued the bejeezum out of the industry to the point that there is a need to practice defensive medicine, which is by no means good cost effective medicine. Thank you John Edwards:pissed:

Well probably none. But being filthy rich and living in the lap of luxury just conflicts with being liberal to me.

Yes, but if you turn that logic around, you condone what's going on now. Rich folks taking care of their own. How does success in life preclude you from caring about those with less material wealth? Would you throw the same barb at JFK? Edwards actually comes from a blue collar background, and has litigated his way to the upper class, doing what he was trained to do, as a trial lawyer. He did not have his money handed to him by his family connections, rather he is self-made.

and the Brett Shampoo Guy will not let us forget that he came from a small family, and is just a simple man. :funn:

I wonder if Edwards would be able to downsize by moving into the White House. :funn:

In today's world, a middle class person would never have enough money to win the office of the President.

I'm just a farmer's son... :floor:Actually, I have seen enough politicians in my family and I am trying to break the chain, so, if elected, I will not serve. Not to mention, they would have to move the White House to the beach. Plus, I could never win because I don't smoke weed or snort cocaine.

What a Robin Hood, that John Edwards...litigating himself into the top tax bracket. He makes me sick. What a perverse tortaholic, suing the crap out of easy targets, banking megabucks and spreading a few crumbs to his clients. The last thing this country needs is a lawyer of his ilk steering the ship.:pissed:
