Our President recently said that our current health care debate is a "healthy thing". But you know, I am not convinced. I say this because I hear very little constructive discourse from those concerned with this issue. Instead I hear much absurd rhetoric.
Healthy, constructive opposition/concern looks like this-
"Mr. President, numerous think tanks and research groups conclude that a public option would create an unfair competitive environment for insurance companies and would force them out of business. What data do you have to suggest this isn't the case?"
"Senator Spector, the bill references end of life counseling every 5 years once a citizen reaches the age of 65. Can you please elaborate on what this means? Is it mandatory? And please help us to understand what some of the media is refering to as "rationing". I don't want to live in a country that has a group of doctors deciding if I am going to get a drug that I really need".
But instead this is what I am hearing-
[shouting]
"I will be quiet no more. We need to get back to the principles we were founded upon. This isn't Russia. I am not going to sit back and watch this country continue on its liberal course to Socialism. Obama told Joe the Plumber what we needed to know- that he was in favor of redistributing wealth. But we ignored it. Well enough is enough. I am 100% against Obamacare!"
One mindset is-
There is something being proposed that I fear and/or don't understand and if you are ever going to get my support you need to address points A, B and C.
The other is-
I don't really want you to address my concerns because I won't tell you specifically what they are. I only know that I love this country and know what is better for it and that your ideas are evil so I am going to vent now. And there are others like me. What you have done is awaken a sleeping giant.
Does anyone else feel this way about our "debate"???
