Oregon Apartment Complex Bans Flying the American Flag - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com

An Oregon apartment complex is banning its residents from flying American flags, not only from their dwellings but also their vehicles, KATU in Portland reported.

Residents' outrage started when Jim Clausen, whose son is in the military and on his way back to Iraq, was told he couldn't fly an American flag from the back of his motorcycle.

If he didn't take the flag down, he was told he'd face eviction, the station reported.

"It floored me," Clausen told the station. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying. It [the flag] stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly the flag."

Sharron White, a long-time resident, was told by management to take down the flag she's flown on her car for eight years because "someone might get offended."

"I just said to her, 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White told the station.

The ban also applies to flag stickers on cars, as well as sports flags.

KATU attempted to contact management at the apartment complex, but no one returned their calls.

Yeah, either that or you may love the first amendment to the Constitution of our country and ALL that it entails....

So you think someone has the right to post opposition to the flag or be offended by the flag, but those that want to defend the flag, fly the flag or support it do not have the same rights as those that oppose it?

My only point here is that it does work both ways and if you do not want to let both sides talk then you do not have the right to talk either.

We have to be concerned that our flag may offend someone when the flag represents this country? So by your own statement... we should not care if someone is offended or not as "you may love the first amendment to the Constitution of our country and ALL that it entails" alone should give us the right to fly our flag without concern for what others may think.

Keep in mind this is the AMERICAN FLAG we are talking about and nothing else. If you don't like America or the freedoms that it offers then you have the right to choose to leave. Do not try to tell the rest of us that we can not support our country.

Y'all are both clever and make me giggle. That's a good thang - I need giggles these days. Thank you.

Oh, and, the American Flag does not symbolize hatred, unless hatred is in the soul of the viewer in an innate, visceral way.....you know? Just sayin'~~~~~~~~

A flag did not fuel those wars... a maniacal person did and a populace that blindly followed.
Whether news is reported from the right or left it takes both sides to ensure that our populace is informed enough to prevent anything close to that from happening.

Sometimes Bob i wish you could respond in the political forum without the racial bullsh!t. This is about the American flag, not the KKK or the confederate flag, or whites, or blacks or the delusions of an obviously angry man.

Stick to the subject...

Serioiusly, you guys, if Mr. Offended had simply gone to the landlord and stated his objections, this would have been solved and Fox would not have had a story.

Instead, it's another manufactured problem which could have been solved at a much lower volume, if everyone had acted like a human being instead of leaping at the opportunity to get their panties in a wad.

We are becoming a nation of Jerry Springer loving drama queens.

they did go to the landlord. fox interviewed them yesterday and they abolutely did.

You actually are saying that 9-11 was a war?
Hmmm seems to me that was a terrorist attack...
The fervor for war that followed was actually whipped up by the flying of planes into the World Trade Center, and the unnecessary loss of Innocent American Citiznes; not by the simple flying of flags.

sometimes people would prefer our country bending over sans the lube after being attacked. sometimes we elect presidents that bang interns and turn a blind eye to our enemies for 8 years

No Lie:

After 9/11/01, when this nation was unified for a moment and there was a run on American Flags, someone made the statement, "Why would anyone make a pledge of allegiance to a flag anyway?"

I challenged the PhD candidate to review the words right after, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America........"
Excellent point. All too often we recite the pledge of allegiance without analyzing what it really says. I'd have loved to see the look on the PhD candidate's face.

really??
I think that if you actually keep in context what we are talking about here, I have been trying to guide us back to a civil conversation.

If you are so bright then enlighten us all on how we would have gone to war just because we were waving our flags if the attack on the WTC had not happened?

According to your words "sometimes the flag is used to whip up fervor for war...see 9-11 "
I believe that this statement coupled with your other posts on here are actually pointing to your own misguided deep seeded hatred and the fact that you are indeed the one who is actually 'lost'.

I will say, Bob, that you alone have made this thread take a wrong turn and you alone have tried to relate the American Flag to Nazi germany, the KKK, etc.

You need help, sir!

we love ya sunspot! i was responding to the pill post. wasn't the original post about fox reporting the display of the flag in oregon? i just happen to think there can be too much of a good thing. i don't want the state to line the avenues with flags unless it's memorial day or july 4th. regarding fighting over private displays of the flag, you could do that forever. some people are obnoxious about it, and i believe they are the very folks that like to start wars.

OK... I just read this whole thread and whether you are liberal conservative or neither, whether you were born in America or chose to move here, we are all given one unalienable right that is protected by the flag...
IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.
The american flag stands for whichever side you believe and it also stands for the diversity of this great country whether you agree with Alpha or Santiago.
The American Flag should be the only symbol of such that is truly 100% protected by the law as we ALL live in America, this right should be protected unconditionally anywhere and everywhere within our borders. MANY HAVE DIED FOR THAT RIGHT.

A flag never protected anybody or anything. When they make one that can stop a bullet, I'll go along with that.

Couldn't a person pledge allegiance to his country without a flag?:idontno: I'm just saying. While the flag may be an enduring symbol, I care much more about the state of the nation and it's people than the flag. I think I understand what the man is saying. George Carlin once said "Symbols are for the symbol minded".

Not once did I bash the flag on this thread. I just don't think it has some sort of magical powers and I'm rational enought to know it's an inanimate object. Sorry you can't deal with a very benign difference of opinion.
