Oregon Apartment Complex Bans Flying the American Flag - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News - FOXNews.com

An Oregon apartment complex is banning its residents from flying American flags, not only from their dwellings but also their vehicles, KATU in Portland reported.

Residents' outrage started when Jim Clausen, whose son is in the military and on his way back to Iraq, was told he couldn't fly an American flag from the back of his motorcycle.

If he didn't take the flag down, he was told he'd face eviction, the station reported.

"It floored me," Clausen told the station. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying. It [the flag] stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly the flag."

Sharron White, a long-time resident, was told by management to take down the flag she's flown on her car for eight years because "someone might get offended."

"I just said to her, 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White told the station.

The ban also applies to flag stickers on cars, as well as sports flags.

KATU attempted to contact management at the apartment complex, but no one returned their calls.

No. What is "serious" is how Fox "Noise" has now quickly becomes Sowal "Noise". I am inclined to believe Fox Noise is now becoming the mouth piece of Sowal.Com. ..and part of the vast right wing conspiracy here in the Panhandle!

Ditto that.

Not once did I bash the flag on this thread. I just don't think it has some sort of magical powers and I'm rational enought to know it's an inanimate object. Sorry you can't deal with a very benign difference of opinion.

try out your rhetoric on someone that was presented with the flag upon the death of a soldier. try it out on someone who just won an olympic medal who is sheading a tear as the American flag ascends. i can deal with your difference of opinion (often it is quite humorous) but on this topic i don't respect it

Godwin's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This has been mentioned recently on another thread - I don't remember which one, however.

Two references to the swastika on this thread - UGH.

SSB, surely you jest! You can't post something controversial like the American Flag and Fox News in one post and not expect this to happen.

This is a discussion board where we're supposed to be able to discuss things freely like adults. We're not at a ceremony where that kind of tact is needed. I said absolutely nothing offensive. Your opinion in this case is immaterial.

tangent man! we've had private citizens wanting to fly gigantic flags in their neighborhoods to the visual detriment of all. perfect example of what i'm arguing about. knuckleheads driving about with dual plastic flags and multiple flag bumper stickers is another example.

Good point! Most people say "stay in school", but in this case, for the sake of our educational system, he needs to get far, far away.

If while renting a condo on the beach one were told to remove their American flag towel draped over the railing or be evicted, would Fox News get up in arms over this when in fact all towels on railings are banned? Of course they would because it feeds to the "America is being destroyed" crowd they pander to.

Serioiusly, you guys, if Mr. Offended had simply gone to the landlord and stated his objections, this would have been solved and Fox would not have had a story.

Instead, it's another manufactured problem which could have been solved at a much lower volume, if everyone had acted like a human being instead of leaping at the opportunity to get their panties in a wad.

We are becoming a nation of Jerry Springer loving drama queens.

the above 2 posts sum up the entire story on this kind of TV news reporting, at least for me.. Fox may be the lead in its Geraldo style news reporting, but all news sources resort to crap news all the time.. I believe that news agencies give us what we want. We have asked for this kind of reporting. We live for it. However, this particular story wasn't even remotely interesting or newsworthy - usually they have a lot more crap to throw in to make it more dramatic, etc. surely this is more to the story?? oh well, maybe next time.

and yes, I do believe everyone should be able to fly the American Flag. Or not. whatever. seems to me there are way too many other important issues, and problems of the day. but that is just me. each person will take what they want from any news story, and it either does it for you, or it doesn't. if you liked this flag story - terrific. if you don't, then move on and find one you do like. or better yet - turn it off or you are going to see a lot more of the same.

but it does make for some interesting commentary on this thread. I wonder why some posters have to be so dang nasty. why not just state your opinion without bashing another for theirs?

I was filled with enough liberal nonsense the first time around. I have no desire at the moment for a second helping. Some of us have to keep working so the redistributer in chief has cash to spread around.

Question - what happened to cause a change in the policy?

Obviously I find it unacceptable for people to face eviction for properly flying a current American flag.........................but since one of the first things mentioned was flying it from the back of a motorcycle and the policy covers all flags I wonder what the REAL story behind this is and what happened to cause the change in policy.

P.S. I find it appalling to once again see so much divisiveness and hatred in a thread about a simple topic you would think we could ALL agree on.

It's funny that Geraldo is about the most level-headed person on the network.

Surely no one believes that this incident was totally about flying the American flag. Something happened at this apartment complex between residents and the flag got caught in the middle. After the media got involved the manager consulted thier lawyers and decided they did not have the legal right to ban the flags.

The manager stated: the flag ban was based on interpretation of two sections of the rental agreement all tenants sign."What we were trying to do was to keep the peace," she said, declining to say whether a specific incident sparked enforcement of the ban. "Obviously, we were wrong. If the peace needs to be kept, it belongs to the police department."

The initial ban was not specifically against the American flag but all flags including sport flags.

Considering the hostility in this discussion among those not even directly affected, does it surprise anyone that something was said at this complex to compell the manager to take a stand to try and keep the peace.

I read but like KDW, it saddens me to see such hateful and spiteful comments so I don't comment much.

I mean in one thread many are all bent out of shape about someone being told they can not fly the American flag and then on another thread those same want the government to control the right to own a gun, eat cereal or even go to McDonald's.

Whatever happened to Americans being allowed to make up on their own mind. Many things can kill us, guns, cars, food, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, even stress. None of these things do the killing, but the person using them or abusing them does.

But surely we have not come to the point as adults we think someone else needs to make those decisions for us.

As to the polictical situation, some just need to get over it and move on, Obama was elected and until his term is up he is President and with that should come the respect of that position. We voted, he won, now move on.

And if you can't find it in your heart to support him, then do us all a favor and put all that energy and hate into something useful and go volunteer to a worthy cause instead of constantly whallowing in self pity.

And that goes to both sides, there are some democrats that need to move on too.

Normally i would say to stay out of the political forum. But I notice there are some new folks who only post in this forum, and do it to cause trouble.

Let this be a warning to all. Personal attacks are not permitted on SoWal.com.
