Shula is dunzo!

Kurt, how do you know that conversations haven't aready taken place? Fact is, you don't. I can tell you without reservation that Alabama started putting out feelers three weeks ago.

Most coaches cannot be officially contacted (or refuse to be contacted) while their respective seasons are still underway.

Please stop commenting on a situation of which I have forgotten more than you'll ever know.

Thanks for trying to right the ship, but I feel its time I officially weigh in. Unlike you and I, Kurt doesn't realize the damage he could be causing by speculating on what WE may be doing. As you and I discussed in the past three weeks, we have many options. Like a well run offense inside the 5-yard line, we shouldn't show our hand too early like Shula did with that Elephant package. We all knew that was destined for failure, but I digress.

Let's get down to business. We are ALABAMA, and would not make a decision like firing Shula without a good reason, and more importantly, without a new coach. That being said, it's a little early and the season isn't over yet. Just because Spurrier would rather coach at South Carolina, Saban would rather coach a losing Dolphins team, and we can't even steal a Rutgers coach away like Miami, we have options. Remember, we were able to hire three head coaches in mere months. Name me another D1 school that has had that kind of success.

I just want to leave everyone with this. We're Alabama, the home of legends- the Bear, Broadway Joe, the Snake and most importantly, Mike Shula himself- so we'll be alright. Thanks again for all your support and ROLL TIDE.

Kurt, why not just worry about your own team? Regardless of who Alabama chooses, it will be an upgrade. Neither you, nor anyone here, has a clue about the things that truly led to Shula's dismissal. Want a comparison? Think Ron Zook.

Unlike the option play, which we were too stubborn to run inside the 5 yard line with the Elephant package. Sorry, I digress but you have to remeber we are Alabama the team with the history of Shaun Alexander and David Palmer- too bad we could only win one National Championship with them. Back to recruiting.

We are ok in that department somewhere around top 10 is what my sources tell me. Now, whether or not they still come I will need to check with my main man, Paul Bryant Jr. because we need to activate the boosters, I mean the troops.

Play calling is tricky in our conference and I think Poppa Shula may be a few years removed, but with JPW all we need is a little time, maybe we can get PHead to come aboard and cover his 6.

I'll keep you posted or let one of my other confidantes on the board let you know what we decide and ROLL TIDE!!

And to address Kathy's concerns, you have to understand what a tense situation we currently have in Tuscaloosa right now. And yes, it bothers me a bit when someone acts as if they have a handle on our situation when in fact they don't.

you're a good guy JB, just a little tense. So, you live right there in T-town do ya? I lived there for quite some time during and after college (about 6 years of college and about 5 years work at UA with some overlap, so about 8 or 9 years total). Still have good friends there, but haven't visited in years... I imagine its quite interesting around there these days...

I understand your feelings JB, it is a tough situation and I am sure especially for you who works and lives there. I will be glad when it is all over and we can just play Alabama football again!!!

The Crimson Tide went from being in love with Mike Shula last year when he went 10-2 to firing him this year after he went 6-6. Surprise meter reading: 8.5. Then again, we probably shouldn't be surprised.
This is, after all, Alabama.
The unpardonable sin was Shula's 0-4 record against Auburn, but that still doesn't make this the right move at the right time for a program craving stability.
Don't look now, but lordly Alabama has become the single biggest burnout job in college football. The Tide's next coach will be the eighth in the last 25 years and the fifth this century. Nobody -- not even the bottom-feeding, revolving-door, dead-end schools like SMU, UNLV, UTEP, Utah State, San Jose State and so forth -- has gone through five coaches as fast as Alabama.

Since Bear Bryant ascended directly into heaven on a dazzling white cloud, surrounded by a host of angels, the program flux has been ongoing. Only Gene Stallings has coached more than four years in Tuscaloosa without fleeing or being fired. Stallings lasted seven seasons in the 1990s, which now makes him look like Joe Paterno in terms of permanence.
Between the stability of Stallings and the turbulence of today, Alabama has been slammed with NCAA sanctions for buying an overweight, underproductive defensive lineman; scandalized by the indiscretions of first Mike DuBose, then Mike Price; dumped by Dennis Franchione, who convinced his players to "hold the rope" through probation but couldn't wait to drop it himself; and now it has fired the alum who helped drag the program through the toughest part of its penalty phase. Somebody find the prestige in that recent run.

And, sorry to be a Debbie Downer here, but wouldn't it be awesome if everyone got as worked up about college ACADEMICS as they do about college athletics?? I think some schools should just chuck their academic programs and exist just for football and basketball, since they seem to already. More work goes into finding a football coach than a professor.

As far as the coaching search, I know nothing. There are a hundred rumors out there, almost all of them internet-based, so I dismiss those automatically.

To answer the question I think is on your mind, I do not think SOS is coming to Alabama. Yes, we could double his salary if that's what it took. But I don't think its about money with him. He's a unique guy and I just don't think the timing is right for him taking the Alabama job.

Just to throw someone out there, Rich Rodriguez is the name du jour. Tomorrow it will likely be someone else.

Personally, I want Paul Johnson from Navy. The guy has won everywhere, even consistently beating Jim Tressel when PJ was at Ga Southern. He is a hard ass and his players love him for it. Very similar to Meyer in that respect.

I guess that was a really long-winded way of saying I have no idea who the next coach will be.
