That unforgettable Southern drawl.

Southern women know their manners:
"Yes, ma'am."
"Yes, sir."
"Why, no, Billy!"

Southern women have a distinct way with fond expressions:
"Y'all come back!"
"Well, bless your heart."
"Drop by when you can"
"How's your Momma?"

Southern women know their summer weather report:
Humidity
Humidity
Humidity

Southern women know everybody's first name:
Honey
Darlin'
Shugah

Southern women know the movies that speak to their hearts:
Fried Green Tomatoes
Driving Miss Daisy
Steel Magnolias
Gone With The Wind

Southern women know their religions:
Baptist
Methodist

Southern women know their country breakfasts:
Red-eye gravy

Southern women know their cities dripping with Southern charm: Charleston (Chawl'stn)
Savannah (S'vanah)
Fort Worth (Foat Wuth)
New Orleans (N'awlins)

Southern girls know the four deadly sins:

Southern girls know men may come and go, but friends are fahevah!

If you're a Northern transplant, Bless your little heart, fake it.

Tootsie: Is this Southern night? :lolabove: I saw your other thread.
Funny, a gullfriend sent me that a few months ago.
Question though? What do you call a Native new Yorker who calls SoWal home too? A Snotherner? :D

I should start thread about things I had to get used to. Having bought 3 years ago, initially it was defintely a culture shock for me.

1) Took me a while to accept and like someone calling me Ma'am.
2) That Southern people bring gifts to weddings, and Northerners cash rolled up in a cannolli.
3) My initial shock when we wet to get breakfast sandwich locally in SoWal and was asked if I wanted any gizzards with that.
4) That we were on Southern time, and things were a lot slower paced vs. N.Y.
5) Y'all vs. Yo in New York
6) That Southern men have hair still in their 40's.
7) That people were very polite.

I have grown to really love it all.

I still don't like to be called Ma'am,, and I was raised saying it to "older" people. guess that's why its always been a shocker when someone calls me ma'am - I don't feel like a ma'am... but I do say "ya'll" every other word. something they left out here, is whenever you meet someone new, you ask: what church do you go to? I love saying "I'm Catholic, but I don't go to church..." many southerners won't like any part of that answer.

That's how I felt initially, but I realized that it was just a sign of respect by Southerners when people older than me called me Ma'am.
Guess it is just what Southerner refer to a lady as.

Mango, the south is also referred to as "The Bible Belt," that's the reason there is a church on every corner.

And for all you Northerners who think your children are Southern because they've developed a drawl after moving down there...remember: Just because the cat has her kittens in the oven, it doesn't make 'em biscuits! :floor:
