okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

Ok ladies - sorry I didn't chime in yesterday on official weigh-in day. I needed to wait until after I worked out at the Y tonight and attempted to redeem myself after several days of misbehaving (I can't remember the last time I ate pizza 3 times in 4 days!)

Anyway, the good news is I finally reached my goal of losing 120 lbs last week. The bad news is I ate too much pizza over the weekend and gained a few back. But I went to the Y tonight and rode the elliptical for 55 minutes AND did all my weight machines. So I'll be back on track before you know it (and hopefully back down to my goal weight within a week!) After tomorrow I am off of work for 5 straight days, so it should be easy for me to find time to continue working out and cook healthy meals. If I get back down to my goal, I'll reward myself with a cosmo or two (haven't had one in over 6 months - next Monday is my b-day and I'll have been officially living this healthier lifestyle for a year!)

And if I can do this ladies, anyone can - take it from someone who could look back on the first 42 years of her life and count on 2 hands the number of times she ever "really" exercised. It is never too late to change.

Great post, Linda!! See why we need you here? Your story is so inspirational!!

:clap_1: :clap_1: :clap_1: What an inspiration which I really need at this point.

Sorry I have been AWALL on SoWal....to many stresses in my life. Maybe things will calm down this winter. Got a sweet pm from dd and knew I had to come back to life. As for weight loss, each day is a battle so I just try not to mess up too badly.

Glad to see you dear! We've missed you! My philosophy is much the same as yours--don't screw up too bad. One day at a time.

Caution everyone: The BIG candy holiday is quickly approaching.

You so bad.

Step 2: I am starting South Beach Monday with a friend.
Good girl!! :clap_1:

Can there be a marg that is waaayyy too big? :idontno: ;-)

Never-No Way!

Caution everyone: The BIG candy holiday is quickly approaching.

I want to report that there are 3 bags of Halloween candy by our front door and I haven't started nibbling on ANY of them. I am very proud of myself. Such restraint!! Let's hope it holds out.

:clap_1: Good girl!! I try to buy candy that I don't like so I won't be tempted, but then people always bring tons of the stuff to work and it's just everywhere. They bring good stuff too--snickers, butterfingers, etc. I need blinders!

I bought myself a bag of fun-size Three Musketeers bars. They are relatively low in fat and calories for chocolate bars and I will sneak one when I'm tempted by something more dangerous.

Also keep in mind that liquor is fat-free.

We just experienced our first visit to Coco's. The medium marg is WAAAYYY too big. Then we had LOTS of chips, then tamales- yum. So, so much for So Well on Sowal. :(
If we exercise and eat only lettuce every single day of the week, except for Wednesdays, then we can go to Coco's every Wed and drink BF margaritas, and eat chips, salsa, cheese dip, tamales and whatever.

Okay maybe once a month.

IBD: I too was in a slump (kind of in general) and I read this article this morning -- it's for work (about leadership and change) but I thought it was great.
Thank you Paula for this article. I'm printing now so I can take it to read at my leisure. this is good inspiration for me and others. thank you for bringing it to us!

Hello...my name is Beachbummett...and I am a foodoholic:shock:
:welcome: to sowell

The medium marg is WAAAYYY too big.
this is a big fat lie!

How's the salsa?
great.

Anyway, the good news is I finally reached my goal of losing 120 lbs last week. It is never too late to change.
you must very proud of yourself - what an achievement. You need to get on this sowell thread and help us achieve our goals. I realize finding the motivation to care for ourselves is key. I'm still in this stage.

each day is a battle so I just try not to mess up too badly.
Sometimes this is as good as we need to be, and that is okay.

Caution everyone: The BIG candy holiday is quickly approaching.
who cares about candy? I just want lots of winter comfort food and wine.

The SoWal wenches have this under control.
DD is a great leader.. and LBH gives such inspiration, Paula is a good motivator, IBD is a shaker, and jdarg is a skinny wench but we still like her a lot. Mango has a lot to teach us -she does so quietly but I say jump in and tell us like it is...

Step 2: I am starting South Beach Monday with a friend.
:clap_1: follow the menu exactly for the first two weeks (shop and chop and cook a lot) and you will not regret it. then repeat.

Who are you, and what have you done with Jenay?
She's just PMS or something.

P.S. I can't decide whose pumpkin I like better - yours or Allifunn's!!!!

Good choice..I did it two years ago lost 50 popunds....then child went off to college, and I put on the "Freshman 15". Have not been able to do SB well the second time around. The first week is pure HE**, but be strong, because it is worth it and easy to do. Probably the simpliest food plan I have tried. Keep us updated and enjoy watching the weight fall off!:clap_1:

Not sure how much I have to teach, but from all the antibiotics I have had to take, I got very yeasty, so I HAD to go on a yeast free diet, The first month, I ate salads without dressing and only olive oil and lemon for flavor. Meat and vegetables. No carbohydrates at all like pasta, pizza, potaotes. No bread. I only drink water, and I have never drank alcohol or beer anyway. No juice or either.
It was brutal. I occasionally for a treat had a sugar free frozen yogurt.
I was allowed to eat apples, and I found a sugarless applesauce and put cinnamon on it. I can have melon. No grapes or mangos though:(
I loaded up on probiotics.
I have since now added a little pasta (No Romano cheese:bang: , and eat potatoes now and some rice. (second month)
Still no bread, or any muffins or pancakes, cookies, cakes, etc. (I did cheat because DD  brought me a coconut pie, but it wasn't loaded with tons of sugar)
To make sandwiches, I use flour tortillas. I didn't really need to lose weight, but I did drop from a size in clothes. Some of my clothes fit me better, and some are too baggy, so I had to go buy new jeans and pants.
Once you get used to eating like that, your body craves these things less and less. But I really miss pizza especially when I don't feel like cooking, and want soemthing quick and easy, but I think it's more mental and not a physical craving.
Breakfast is hard on this diet. I really was limited to eggs and bacon and I really miss my muffins.
I have been now adding walking to my regime, but it is getting cold here and isn't motivating me much.
I think I have to move to SoWal cause I was up every morning at sunrise to walk on the beach and that felt grayt. ;-)

If I ate like you Mango - I would be so skinny I wouldn't have to talk to anybody ;-) . thanks for this information. some comments:

regarding the olive oil/lemon (or olive oil/wine vinegar) - this isn't bad at all on a salad - it's one of those things that I can certainly live with. the oil is so good for you. you can also add flax seeds (ground or whole), or use flax oil instead of olive oil. The ground flax seeds are kind of nutty tasting.

alcohol - this is one of the worst things we can do to our bodies if routinely consumed, and in mass quantities, like some of us wenches like to do. not only huge calorie consumption, but also ups the risk of cancer and many other diseases.

fresh veggies & fruit - we all need as much of this as we can stand. this is where I need to improve the most.

drink your water - we all know the importance of drinking a lot of water. I read this article in USA Today just yesterday. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2006-10-24-water-diet_x.htm

olive oil/lemon (or olive oil/wine vinegar)

I prefer an equal amount of olive oil/balsamic vinegar. It is wonderful on salads and over veggies!!!

SO true--all of it. I'm afraid I may have given the impression that I consume mass quantities of alcohol:eek: Only on occasion--special occasion. There are many nights when I am stone cold sober posting:roll: .
Toots, you are so right about the veggies--but as I've gotten older, I find I like them less and less. What's that about? I will make it a priority though.

No one could possibly eat the amount of vegetable and fruit that is really required for optimal health, so I cheat, and I take this stuff

I feel like Popeye after drinking this.
It also is helps detoxify the body especially if you smoke and cuss. ;-)

Not if you mix it with a margarita mix. :funn:

Here's all the ingredients.

Mostly vitamins and herbs and some veggie and fruit stuff. Doesn't taste terrible. I mix with some juice. It's ugly green though. Really good for you. Like I said, Popeye juice.
